Gold Coast Airport is the best option for domestic travellers and flights to and from NZ. Touch down in Coolangatta, and you'll be a 27km drive to Surfers Paradise (about 30 mins by car). There's also the Gold Coast Tourist Shuttle and bus options.
The public transport system runs throughout the Gold Coast with bus lines and Queensland Rail train routes. The tram service (G:Link) is also available with Gold Coast Light Rail. Some of the suburbs on the waterfront are walkable, but plan your trip with transport options in mind for beach-hopping.
GC weather is mild, making any time perfect for outdoor adventures. In September, the Swell Sculpture Festival fills Currumbin Beach with 3-D colour. Supercars Gold Coast 600 revs up Surfers Paradise each October. Oh and, for three weeks each November, Gold Coast hosts the biggest Schoolies in Australia. You may want to plan your holiday for a different time if you're not keen on being part of the celebrations.

We saw mobs of kangaroos in zoos and in the wild all along the coast. When we got close the joeys would climb in the moms' pouches. But these weren't little babies. Large hopping animals that seemed they were almost half as big as the moms would jump in head first. Then their legs would protrude like sticks out of the moms' pockets. Very strange.

The GC is not all waves and wetsuits! Yes, you might have to hire a car or join a Gold Coast Hinterland tour, but the drive is worth it if you're an fitness or nature buff. Lamington National Park has over 320km of walking trails to choose from, including O'Reilly's Tree Top Walk (steel walkways suspended under a rainforest canopy - yeah, it makes for great photos).
Located in the Gold Coast Hinterland, Springbrook National Park is a must for hikers. Animal lover? Spend a day at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary with some cuddly (and not so cuddly creatures). When it's time to get in the water, check out Burleigh Heads, known for its pristine beach, stellar parks, and scenic creek.
The name says it all. The Gold Coast is known for its beach holiday vibes and long stretches of glittering surfer-ready beaches. Lately, the region has stepped up as more of a cultural and family-friendly community.
