At first glance many tourists don’t stop in Phuket Town, choosing to head to the popular destinations of Kata Beach or Patong. Hit the streets when you’re in Phuket Town, as the best way to explore the town is on foot. Stroll through the amulet market and check out the variety of Buddha images and amulets for sale, before landing on Soi Romanee. A street full of colourful buildings, it’s very different to the rest of Thailand because all of the power lines have been transferred underground. Enjoy a coffee at one of the great cafes or listen to live jazz every month from November to April.

The wealth of Phuket Town came from the tin that was mined in the region, and a visit to Old Phuket Town will give you a feel for what it meant to be truly wealthy. Explore grandiose Sino-colonial mansions, wonderfully ornate shrines and temples, and many quaint little private museums. The best part? The whole area can be covered on foot. Explore it in the late afternoon as the weather cools down, then top off your night with dinner at one of the great restaurants nearby.

Khao Rang (Rang Hill) is the most famous viewpoint in Phuket. Drive to the summit to get a photo of the beautiful views across the town, to the south of Phuket and out to the neighbouring islands. Behind you it’s also possible to see the spine of the mountains that cross the island, which is home to the famous Big Buddha. For a different experience, Monkey Hill also offers great scenery, as well as a troupe of macaques happily munching away on fruit provided by tourists. Both viewpoints are an easy drive from the town.

Shoppers can get their fix at the Weekend Markets, just outside of Phuket Town. Hundreds of stalls offering a fascinating pile of second-hand goods, curious items and pirated DVDs, you can also buy live animals and great local food. Definitely worth a visit even if you don't plan to buy anything – the experience of the markets is phenomenal.
