Santa Fe has 22 performing arts organizations including: the world-renowned Santa Fe Opera celebrating its 43rd season, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival in its 27th season, Indian Market, the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Shakespeare in the Park, Santa Fe Stages, the Museum of New Mexico, the Folk Art Museum, the Wine and Chile Fiesta, and numerous other special events. There are over 250 art galleries, 70 jewelry shops and 13 museums in the city itself and various other galleries and studios in the surrounding areas. Santa Fe is said to be the third largest art market in the United States and the variety of artistic creativity is truly a feast for the eyes and the soul.

Shopping is consistently ranked as one of the top vacation activities. The shopping opportunities available to visitors range from craft and local artisans, including artful jewelry , pottery and weavings of New Mexico's Native American tribes to the products of well known designers from around the world.

DINING:
Those with sophisticated tastes can enjoy over 225 restaurants featuring cuisine from all over the world.

RECREATION:
There's no lack of excitement to be found in Santa Fe and surrounding areas: Mountain-biking, horseback riding, fly-fishing on a fast-running stream and hiking up numerous trails. There are more adventurous activities, like rafting and kayaking down the Rio Grande, as well as unusual pursuits such as llama trekking to being part of an archaeological dig.

CULTURE & HERITAGE:
Though the city has changed considerably through the years, it has retained its exotic nature while becoming more sophisticated. The Native Americans influence the area with viewpoints and lifestyles deeply tied to nature and completely contrary to American norm. Many of the Hispanics there still live within extended families and practice devout Catholicism; they bring a slower pace to the city and an appreciation for deep-rooted ties. Meanwhile, a strong cosmopolitan element contributes cutting-edge cuisine, world-class opera, first-run art films, and some of the finest artwork in the world, seen easily while wandering the strange crooked streets from gallery to gallery, and museum to museum.

Santa Fe is the longest continuously occupied capital city in the United States. The city's founder, Spanish Governor Don Pedro de Peralta, built the Palace of Governors as his capitol on the north side of the central Plaza, where it stands today as an excellent museum to the city's four centuries of history. Under its portico, Native American sit cross-legged, selling their crafts to eager tourists, as they have done for decades.
Other structures still standing include what is claimed to be the oldest house in the United States, built of adobe by Native Americans purportedly 800 years ago. The San Miguel Mission is the oldest mission church in the country, while the state capitol, built in the circular form of a ceremonial Indian kiva, is among the newest in the United States.
The Plaza, which is walking distance from the Resort, is the focus of numerous bustling art markets and Santa Fe's early September fiesta, celebrated annually since 1770.
Visiting the Indian Pueblos: Encompassing 19 Pueblos, two Apache reservations and the eastern side of the Navajo reservations, New Mexico is home to a large, dynamic American Indian population. Many tribal members live in traditional communities inhabited before the first Europeans entered the Rio Grande Valley. They remain an integral part of modern New Mexico, with highly developed art forms, agricultural and business enterprises and deep commitment to preserving this land of timeless beauty.

While the Pueblo people genuinely welcome visitors throughout the year, visitors must realize that the Pueblos are sovereign nations and not living museums or theme parks. Your experience will be as satisfying as it is memorable if you observe the rules governing visitors and photography at each Pueblo. Camera fees usually apply. RELIGION & SPIRITUALITY:
With a multi-cultural tradition and history of tolerance, Santa Fe has become a spiritual center with many healers, meditation centers, therapists and disciplines of all kinds. Santa Fe has more than 50 Christian churches, two synagogues, two Buddhist temples and dozens of other spiritual centers supporting may other beliefs.
