Are you craving a wild night out, a famous footy team playing an action-packed game, or a relaxed art gallery and museum tour? Manchester is one UK city famous for sport, history, and rock and roll. Wot more could you ask for? Browse our Manchester hotels below and spend some time in this city that has it all.
Manchester was a quiet market town until the Industrial Revolution, when the invention of the spinning jenny placed it at the centre of the cotton trade. Since then, the city has made history many times: John Dalton, the father of atomic theory, died here in 1844. Charles Rolls met Henry Royce here in the Midland Hotel in 1904. In 1948, the University of Manchester’s Small-Scale Experimental Machine became the world’s first stored program computer. Manchester has always been a thriving musical city too, giving us The Smiths, Joy Division, New Order and, more recently, the Chemical Brothers and Oasis.
Things to do
Love your music? Manchester’s hip bars are the perfect place to catch a live up-and-coming band or maybe even rub elbows with famous local musos. If you’re not into rock, Manchester’s nightlife offers more than just guitars. This city is also a dance music destination, and you can get your techno on at a nightclub, stumble across a stylish and “secret” bar, and even combine cocktails and bowling (we can’t promise your aim will be great, though).
Footy fans can take behind-the-scenes tours of Old Trafford or Etihad Stadium, the stadiums of Manchester United and Manchester City. The National Football Museum is open seven days a week and has over 140,000 football items, including the FIFA collection. But there’s more than footy in Manchester’s sporting world: Brush up your snowboarding skills at Chill Factore, the UK’s largest indoor snow slope, or experience the feeling of skydiving indoors at Airkix.
And you’ll find no shortage of interesting museums in Manchester, like the Museum of Science and Industry, the Manchester Museum, the People’s History Museum and the Imperial War Museum. See the John Rylands Library, one of the world’s most stunning libraries, inside a grand old neo-Gothic Victorian building.
Shopping and dining
There’s plenty of shopping to be had in Manchester: vintage shops, department stores, designer outlets and outdoor farmer’s markets. As well as the usual British and pub food, the dining scene features dishes from across the world, including Asian, Mediterranean and South American.
