The capital of the county, Bedford, is best known as the birthplace of John Bunyan. A safari on foot is also available to get up close to the smaller animals including the wide-eyed, red-bellied lemurs.

The Bedfordshire Clanger is another essential part of the history of the region but is sadly becoming hard to find. It's a pastry traditionally cooked by the wives' of agricultural workers for a midday snack. At one end is meat and at the other end jam. It's easy to sneer at its crudeness but it is completely delicious and very clever in its practicality.
