The United Arab Emirates has a 5,000 year history and has been an Islamic nation since 636AD. Its people have been influenced by Persians, Greeks, Portuguese and Brits over the years and have become extremely influential in the global financial market, thanks to their rich supply of oil. Since 1972, the country has been made up of seven emirates (similar to states), the two most prominent being Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Things to do
Drop into the UAE’s capital city, Abu Dhabi and enjoy the combination of historic and contemporary architecture. For a blast from the past there's the Al Hosn Palace (built in 1766), the White Fort (built in 1761) and the Abu Dhabi Heritage Village. For something a bit more modern, take a look at the gold-plated lobby in the Emirates Palace Hotel and snap a selfie underneath its famous pink Triumphant Arch. No trip to Abu Dhabi would be complete without an afternoon hanging out at Corniche, enjoying the waterfront views.
Within the Abu Dhabi emirate you'll find the oasis city of Al Ain. Surrounded by date palms and traditional souq markets, you're time here will be well spent, especially if you visit the Al Ain Museum and Al Ain Zoo.
Make a beeline for Dubai and admire the unique buildings. The two most famous are the Burj Khalifa – the world's tallest building – and the Burj Al Arab – best known for its unusual sail design. Other places of interest are Jumeirah Beach, Dubai Creek, the Jumeirah Mosque, the Dubai Fountain and the Dubai Marina. If you feel like getting active while you're here, you can have a go at scuba diving, snorkelling, deep sea fishing and surfing or go camel riding, head out on a 4WD desert safari or have a round on one of the championship golf courses.
Shopping and dining
Dubai is one of the world's favourite shopping destinations and you certainly won't be short on choices with the Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates and Mercato Mall. And if you're here during one of the shopping festival seasons, you'll be able to snag yourself some great bargains. The Dubai Shopping Festival runs throughout the month of January and the Dubai Summer Surprises Festival is held in August. Don't just shop till you drop in the shopping centres though; make sure you spend some time wandering around the traditional markets, especially the Gold Souk. With a population ratio of about four expats to each local, you'll find just about every cuisine on the planet here.
