Gallipoli is overflowing with fascinating history dating back centuries but perhaps the hardest hitting of all is in much more recent memory. This part of Turkey was home to some of the worst fighting in World War One between the Allied forces and the Turkish Army and is particularly stirring for Australians and New Zealanders as many of their soldiers served and died here and as a result are still remembered today during ANZAC Day. We offer a range of Gallipoli hotels which enable you to stay and experience the sad and occasionally heroic history of this region. Gallipoli is located in the Dardenelles Strait and for centuries navies have attempted to pass this narrow strip of water to try and overhaul Istanbul but few have succeeded. This is true from the period when the Ottoman Empire reigned through to the First World War and this is why there are so many memorable sights and locations nearby our hotels in Gallipoli. Perhaps one of the most important places to visit is ANZAC Cove which is where the Allied forces, mainly from Australia and New Zealand, managed to successfully set up a base despite being under constant threat from the closely situated Turkish Army. Withdrawal from Gallipoli and ANZAC Cove happened in 1916 after both sides suffered horrendous losses but the beach is well worth seeing today. The Kabatepe Information Centre and Museum is also a must visit to get to understand the history a bit better and to see genuine objects from the time of war. Another important site is the Gallipoli Peninsula Historic Park which is an enormous area scattered with war memorials and cemeteries dedicated to soldiers of many nationalities. Trenches, war remains, ancient castles and ruins can also be found here. Using your hotel in Gallipoli as a base, you can immerse yourself in the deep historical and cultural significance of this part of Turkey. |
