Patong is on the west coast of Phuket, and is the island's most popular beach, with the largest concentration of tourists. Patong is approximately 15km west of Phuket Town and can easily be reached by taxi or bus. Patong was hit pretty hard by the 2004 tsunami, but is now been almost completely rebuilt. Patong boasts a gorgeous white sand beach, around 3km long, which is very clean despite the town being one of South East Asia's most developed resort areas. Stay in our Patong Beach hotels and relax on the beach, go for a swim, enjoy water sports such as parasailing, kayaking, windsurfing or jet skiing, indulge in a Thai massage, or barter for a bargain from the beach vendors. When you get hungry, treat your tastebuds at one of the many restaurants or cafes that line the beach. Patong Beach is also the main departure point on the island for liveaboard cruises and diving trips and offers great opportunities for snorkelling and surfing. Patong is renowned as the party capital of Phuket and the nightlife ranges from pubs and bars to go-go bars and nightclubs. Phuket, and especially Patong, has a tolerant atmosphere and there is much mixing of the gay and straight scene. Remember to keep an open mind when you inevitably come across Phuket's famous (and perhaps infamous) transsexuals, otherwise known as Kathoey or ladyboys. Patong's gay scene is centred around the Paradise Complex on Rath-U-thit Road. Bangla Raod and its four sois (laneways) Crocodile, Eric, Gonzo and Seadragon offer many different nightspots and this area is predominantly straight except for Soi Crocodile which is also know as Soi Kathoey. It pays to bare in mind that many of Patongs nightspots are little more than fronts for prostitution but there are many great spots to realx with a cocktail and hit the dance floor. If crowds aren't really your thing you might instead consider heading to the next beach to the north of Patong and stay in one of our Kamala Beach hotels; or stay in our Karon Beach resorts just south of Patong.
