Kanchanaburi is infamous for its harrowing World War Two history and the region is a fascinating place to visit for a humbling experience but there is also plenty more to do in this nature rich part of Thailand. Kanchanaburi is home to the bridge over the River Kwai, since immortalised by Hollywood, which is part of the death railway that caused over 100,000 fatalities as Allied POWs and Asian labourers were forced to work on its construction by the Japanese Army between 1942 and 1943. Staying in a River Kwai hotel provides the ideal base to explore the history of the region and we can offer boutique resorts to colonial style accommodation. To get a true understanding of the events that took place, the JEATH Museum is a great starting point as it contains many photos, accounts and stories from the Japanese occupation. From there a trip to the bridge is essential and when loaded with that extra knowledge from the museum, the site will become much more captivating. Travelling along the death railway is a great way to witness the work that was done but it also provides a superb opportunity to admire the spectacular countryside which passes by. We offer Kanchanaburi hotels that are located nearby to Tha Kilen Station which is the launch point for the most picturesque section of the railway. Getting off at Nam Tok terminal station will provide some respite from the history of the region as the nearby Sai Yok National Park can be explored. Waterfalls, caves and stunning scenery all combine here for a worthy day trip. Back in Kanchanaburi City a visit to the Prasat Muang Singh Historical Park is highly recommended. This site contains Khmer style ruins which date back to the 13th century and the main temple is believed to be built for Mahayana Buddhists as a place of worship. Travelling around the site on a rental bicycle is probably the best way to enjoy the peaceful surroundings before heading back to your Kanchanaburi hotel. Image from Kwanz |
