Johannesburg - Soweto Hotels

Soweto is an abbreviation for “South Western Township”, referring to its history as a township in the Apartheid days. Soweto is known in South African history as a place of bloodshed, partially due to the “Soweto Uprising” of 1976, when protests erupted over the government’s decision to enforce education in Afrikaans rather than English. On the first day of protests the police opened fire and killed 23 people. There are several “Soweto Uprising” tours available which will take you around the various sites of this tragic protest.

These days, Soweto is a place of optimism, which at the same time highlights its heritage. With our range of Soweto hotels you can explore this historic place and delve into some South African history. A must-visit is the “Nelson Mandela National Museum” in Orlando West, a museum of Nelson Mandela’s former house, filled with personal artefacts. For you movie buffs, if you’ve seen Neil Blomkamp’s “District 9”, you’ll recognise parts of Soweto (specifically Chiawelo) as you explore.

Oh, and one more thing: when you book your Soweto accommodation through Wotif.com, your booking is instantly confirmed and complemented by a 24/7 Customer Service Team, who are happy to assist with any questions you may have. Lekker!
