The oldest city in Taiwan, Tainan is well known for its numerous temples and significant historical sites, more than 50 of which are officially listed as national treasures. It is the fourth largest city on the island with a population of just over 760,000.

Shopping districts
In addition to two major department stores, the Far Eastern and Mitsukoshi, Tainan's many night markets are some of the most popular places in the city for shopping for all kinds of goods, as well as for excellent street food.

Chikan Tower
Chikan Tower is Tainan's most famous historical site. In 1653 the Dutch built Fort Provintia in this area, and the Chinese named it Tower of Savages or Tower of Red-haired Barbarians. Chikan Tower is its official name today, and it retains many of its original architectural aspects. Filled with various kinds of steles, stone horses and weights, the courtyard resembles an outdoor museum. It is especially attractive at night.

Anping Old Fort
The Dutch built Anping Fort, which was originally called Fort Zeelandia, in 1620. Panoramic views of the ocean make this a popular place to watch the sunset.
