Exploring Delhi :
Situated along the Yamuna River, New Delhi was built by the British in the 1930s and is the youngest of several historic cities that have occupied this site in northern India. Today the city is a dynamic metropolis of over 14 million people, and is dotted with the remains of it’s fascinating past. With historical sites, museums and art galleries abound, Delhi is a major cultural centre.

The colourful markets of the region carry a vast and exciting range of handicrafts, with government-run state emporia offering a wide range of merchandise at fixed and reasonable rates. For the adventurous, there are the street stalls and bazaars where bargaining is a way of life.

National Museum
Five millennia of Indian history can be discovered at the National Museum. The collection of more than 150,000 pieces of art, artifacts and Central Asian treasures is among the finest in the world.
Purana Qila
Purana Qila (“old fort”) stands on an ancient mound and is the place where Humayun, the second Mughal emperor began construction of his city, Dinpanah. The site has been continuously occupied since 1000 BC and offers a full day’s worth of sightseeing and learning about Delhi’s rich history.
Lodhi Garden
sLocated in the heart of residential New Delhi, these gardens were built by British aristocracy in 1936, displacing two historic villages. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of both ancient and colonial India as they stroll through the gardens that were set around the tombs belonging to the 15th-century Sayyid and Lodhi dynasties.
Jantar Mantar
This observatory was commissioned in 1724 by the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah. The observatory was built with revolutionary instruments designed to calculate eclipses and planetary positions along with the altitude of the sun. Today the observatory sits in a pleasant park and is most certainly worth a visit.
India Gate
The India Gate was built to commemorate the Indian and British soldiers who died in World War 1, and those who fell in the Third Afghan War. An eternal flame, ‘ Amar Jawan Jyoti’ burns in memory of those who died in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war. Around India Gate are the stately homes of Indian princes, including Hyderabad House where many official state banquets are held.
Rashtrapati Bhavan
Designed to be the focal point of New Delhi during British rule, today this palace is the President of India’s official residence. For early risers, the changing of the guard ceremony occurs at 6.30am as weather permits. The nearby Mughal Gardens are also worth exploring.
