Want peace and quiet in the day and partying in the night? Then head to Ermita, located in the heart of Manila. By day the collection of monuments, museums and government buildings brings a bit of peace to the Manila city centre. However, by night, this district and its southern neighbour, Malate, bring the evening to life with the bright lights of restaurants and the thumping beats of nightclubsand bars. Book from our selection of Ermita and Malate hotels and experience the best of both worlds.
The district has an eastern edge that covers a section of the Manila Bay waterfront and narrows down to a small stretch on the south bank of Pasig River. A good day-tour would be to start at the seaside, visiting Manila Ocean Park to see its marine life exhibits – sure to be a hit with families – before moving on into Rizal Park. The centrepiece here is the Rizal Monument, commemorating the famous Filipino nationalist, Jose Rizal. His remains are located on-site, which has a round-the-clock ceremonial guard by Philippine Marine Corps. The park also has Japanese and Chinese museums, a planetarium, an impressive relief map of the Philippines surrounded by a pond, museums, a children’s playground and more.
Rizal Park is the site of many one-off and annual events, including the Feast of the Black Nazarene in early January, when large crowds gather for the procession of the stature of Nazarene. In June, dignitaries, veterans and others gather to begin Philippine Independence Day ceremonies.
Your wanderings will no doubt leave you ready for a meal, and while Ermita restaurants have great worldwide cuisines, the opportunity to find a restaurant that serves local Filipino food should not be missed, particularly ones with grilled seafood. If your feet are still holding up, you can shift from sightseeing to shopping at either Robinson Place Manila and SM City Manila, but you may want to save your legs for after dark. Whatever gets you in the party mood, you should be able to find it here. You can rock out to live bands with the younger crowds in venues on Remedios Street, duck into one of many girlie bars or just settle for an authentic local pub.
Ermita is a bit like the eye of a storm, a bit of calm and order amid fast-paced city life, which can all change in an instant come night. See Manila how you want to with a pick from our Malate and Ermita accommodation list and get yourself over there with a flight to Manila!
