Slave Lake’s Founding History
In 1799 European explorer David Thompson arrived in Slave Lake. Within a short time after Thompson’s inaugural visit, five fur-trading posts were set up due to the abundance of available pelts. The Hudson Bay Company established a post that was subsequently taken over by the Northwest Company. Slave Lake, more formally known as Lesser Slave Lake, takes its name based upon its northern counterpart, the Great Slave Lake, located in the Northwest Territories.
In 1994 Slave Lake was the proud host of the Arctic Winter Games, and it is the hometown of former Canadian senator Walter Patrick Twinn. Today, Slave Lake is home to over 7,000 hardworking Albertans.
