Winner of the 2007 Australian National Tidy Towns Award, beautiful Swansea is sited centrally in the Freycinet Coast region on the touring route known as 'The East Coast Escape', and is the only historic listed coastal town in Tasmania; it retains many old buildings from the time of first European settlement. Meredith House is one of them. Close to all amenities and located a short 3 minute walk from the beach. Many of our guests take the walk around Waterloo Point for the stunning ocean views across to Freycinet and The Hazards.

Eating out in Swansea has got even better with the opening of Piermont and The BANC. The newest eatery in town Onyx offers breakfast, lunch and a fine providore. At THE BANC, Chef John T Bailey brings his culinary expertise to Swansea, along with great service from wife Lee Bailey and the team; it is a fantastic venue, serving beautiful local produce from an imaginative and delicious menu. You will probably want to stay at least two nights in order to visit both of these fantastic restaurants; we are happy to make reservations for you just call us or indicate your dining preference on your booking, we can even email you the menus. Wherever you choose to eat in Swansea you can be assured of great Tasmanian food and wine.

If you want to do a little shopping call at Bear Cottage Crafts on Franklin Street, here you will find an extensive range of gift items, craft supplies and, of course, bears. A short walk along the street is 'Dos Vagabundos' offers a range of imported wares & great South American items.

1 km south of Swansea is Kates Berry Farm, with stunning views, fresh berries in season, homemade ice cream, jam and preserves - you've just got to go!

Wineglass Bay and the Freycinet National Park are a 45 minute drive away. At Coles Bay you will find FREYCINET SEA CRUISES who operate a morning cruise around the Peninsula to Wineglass Bay, and an afternoon cruise around Schouten Island. Rastus the dolphin spotting dog (honest)is always on board, and Duncan, Irene and the crew offer great service and an informative journey. Prior booking is recommended.

Maria Island is a former convict station and settlement off the coast between Orford and Triabunna; a daily service operates to and from the island departing at 9:30 and returns 4.00 p.m. You will need to take your own provisions, or we can supply you with a picnic pack, as there are no amenities on the island, just pristine walks, undisturbed nature and fascinating wildlife. While you're in Triabunna visit Sufi's Craft Shop, where it is Christmas all year round; she also makes a fantastic Devonshire style Cream Tea. Giraween Gardens is another popular vistor stop.

On the way to Freycinet peninsula you will pass six wineries, Bishops Rock, Coombend, Milton, Springvale, Craigie Knowe and Freycinet; each have cellar door tasting and purchasing facilities. If you are driving north from Hobart why not stop at Darlington vineyard in Orford, great views of Maria Island and stunning wines.

Or you may just want to take it easy, sit on our verandah, or in the garden and relax. We have an extensive wine list offering the best of Tasmanian vintage.

The Freycinet Coast is yours to EXPLORE, INDULGE and ENJOY. It offers a vast range of tourism attractions whatever your age, gender or interests, in fact, the most frequent comment we get is 'one night was not enough!"
