Some of the building’s wonderful history:
• During its long history, five colleges and schools occupied the premises including University College, which in 1905 moved with the Sheffield Medical School to form the new University of Sheffield at Western Park.
• In the same year, King Edwards VII School briefly used Firth Building, prior to moving to its Glossop Road site in 1906.
• The final school to use the building was the Central Tech, which moved to a new site in 1964, although evening classes continued into the 1970’s and the Education Department then used the building until 2001.
• The Education Department was also on the site, using the building that had been built in 1880 for the Sheffield School Board.
• Firth College was established by Mark Firth in 1879 and opened in that year by Prince Leopold (hence Leopold Street).
• Schools / colleges using the Firth Building were:- Firth College 1879 to 1892, University College 1892 to 1905, Kind Edward VII School 1905 to 1906, Central Secondary School 1906 to 1933 (Girls), Central (Jnr) Technical School 1933 to 1964 (Boys), Evening Courses 1950’s to 1970’s.
• Converted into the Leopold Hotel Sheffield in June 2007.
