Noosa Biosphere Reserve is Queensland’s 1st UNESCO biosphere created in 2007. The Noosa Biosphere abuts the 2nd Qld biosphere to the North, the Great Sandy Biosphere. Both biospheres parallel World Heritage Listed Fraser Island forming a unique collection of ecologically rich biodiversity featuring 626 vertebrate fauna species and nearly 25% of this State’s mangrove plant species - all easily accessible using Noosa as the hub.

The Noosa Biosphere covers an area 1,500 sq kms including farms, townships in a magical Hinterland, bushlands, national parks, coastlines and the Noosa River catchment and associated lakes. The biosphere also includes three kms of adjacent offshore waters. The biosphere provides a focus on Noosa’s aspirations for a sustainable future: to work together to build sustainable communities & sustainable economies and to undertake research and learning. Students of nature from around the globe visit the Noosa Biosphere Reserve as one of Australia’s great living laboratories.

The Noosa Biosphere is a not-for-profit community volunteer organisation supported by Local Government and sponsors. The biosphere residents are represented across six advisory sector boards covering environment, economics, education R&D, culture, social and tourism. In all some 70+ volunteers work together and through a Secretariat to deliver on the Noosa Biosphere.

Noosa Biosphere Day is held each September. The biosphere partners with some 200 community groups across over 50 projects.
