In the Urubamba Valley, visit the fortress town of Ollantaytambo where the Incans headed off the Spaniards by flooding the valley below. Nearby, the Pisac market is the shopping spot for locals where vegetable and spices can be viewed and sampled and you may barter for exquisite handicrafts.
Board the train or head off on foot via the Inca Trail to the breathtaking Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu. The Lost City was indeed a complete city with industrial, residential and agricultural sectors. The city remained undiscovered until 1911 and is remarkably well preserved, with stairways, temples and terraces waiting to be discovered by you. Most visitors prefer to stay at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge adjacent to the ruins or the Machu Picchu Pueblo at the bottom of the hill. There are less expensive options in Aguas Calientes without the comforts that these two properties offer.
