Kowloon - Yau Ma Tei Hotels

Hong Kong and Kowloon have so much to offer. Sections of these cities are so unique they can keep you occupied for days. Yau Ma Tei is the perfect example of this. Down at street level, between the towering buildings and serious skyscrapers, is an area whose streets are alive with personality. There are markets that feel just as much a part of the city as the buildings and quaint architecture that are reminiscent of the small village Hong Kong once was. Grab one of our great Yau Ma Tei hotels and get stuck into the highlights of vibrant Hong Kong.

Things to do

Yau Ma Tei is in the south of the Kowloon Peninsula and is part of the city’s heart. One of the main arteries of Kowloon is Temple Street. It’s by no means the widest road, but it’s definitely one with a lot of life. There is a night market here that begins at 2:00pm and closes in the wee hours of the morning. Hundreds of stalls line the street selling clothes, gadgets, accessories and antiques. Work your way behind the stalls and into the side streets for even more selection. Fortune tellers are also on hand to peek into your future. Before the market, you should visit Tin Hau Temple, a quaint complex with coiled incense hanging from the ceiling that lasts for weeks, and get your fortune read.

Even the area’s museums are unusual. Toys, old and new, from all over the world can be studied in the displays at Hong Kong International Hobby and Toy Museum. Elsewhere, on Waterloo Road, the Red Brick House (Engineer’s Office of the Former Pumping Station) stands protected for its historic significance, looking strangely out of place but cool among the modern cityscape that rose around it over the years.

Eating out

Yau Ma Tei is also like a food museum that is home to gems like La Taverna Restaurant – Hong Kong’s oldest Italian restaurant, expensive steak houses, and cheap and very cheerful street food. Temple Street and the Mong Kok area are where you can find juicy grilled meat on a stick, waffles, and even quick and easy Chinese seafood!

The best way to see Yau Ma Tei is undoubtedly walking, but if you want to break beyond its borders and see the rest of Hong Kong – which you definitely should – head to the nearest MTR Station (likely Yau Ma Tei Station) and enjoy the smooth, short rides to other corners of the city. Hong Kong Island may be across Victoria Harbour, but you can be there in minutes. Just remember to take the ferry across at least once as it’s the best way to see the city sights.
