Thousands of people converge on the city the first Tuesday in May for the renowned May Racing Carnival, regional Victoria’s premier horse-racing event. The three-day carnival features the world-famous Grand Annual Steeplechase, which boasts more jumps than any other race in the world.

Warrnambool is also the hub of the Great South Coast’s education and training. High standards are maintained through a strong apprenticeship and traineeship network and the presence of South West Institute of TAFE and Deakin University, which attracts students from around the state, country and overseas.
The Institute of TAFE provides education and training for 11,000 students in the areas of automotive, transport and building industries, engineering, electro technology, business and IT,
arts, education, health and community studies, hospitality and tourism, rural and horticulture,and science and food technology.
Deakin University has over 1,200 on-campus students and 70 doctoral research students. Deakin has a broad range of programs in commerce, law, arts, environment, health, nursing and teaching and attracts over $3m annually in research grants mainly in the health and environment fields. The University has recently received funding to establish a medical school in the region, with Deakin’s Greater Green Triangle Clinical School to be based in Warrnambool.

As the major retail and tourism centre of the Great South Coast, Warrnambool features more than 300 large and small stores. This is an expanding industry, with a low shop vacancy rate of below two per cent necessitating the development of additional shopping precincts.

Tourism is also a strategic industry for Warrnambool, attracting 2.7 million annual visitors and contributing $156.7 million to the economy. The Federal Government has placed Warrnambool in the top 10 Victorian regional tourism destinations, with the city benefiting from its position on the Great Ocean Road. It is the largest accommodation provider in the Great South Coast, offering access and services to major attractions such as the 12 Apostles. Food production and manufacturing are major industries, with Warrnambool situated at the heart of Australia’s fastest growing food industry region. More than two billion litres of milk is produced annually and processed for export by major firms in the city and surrounding region, including the ASX-listed Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory, Nestle, Murray Goulburn and Bonlac. Local milk production is expected to grow by at least 50 per cent over the next five to 10 years, providing opportunities for new investment. One of Victoria’s largest saleyards is located in the city, as is the Midfield Meat Group, one of Australia’s largest exporters of beef and lamb products. The City By The Sea also has a successful seafood industry, with rock lobster, abalone and a variety of fish caught off Warrnambool’s shores. The majority of this product is exported to Asia.
These thriving industries are supported by a reliable and strong transport network, which features road, rail and air links. The Princes, Hamilton and Midland highways underpin a major freight industry, with daily rail and air services ensuring passengers and freight are transported to national and international destinations with ease.
