One of the greatest cities in England during medieval times and still today. Offering a rare blend of historic interest and modern sophistication, this is East Anglia’s capital city, this is Norwich.
Norwich is dominated by its magnificent 900 year old Norman Cathedral, which boasts the largest monastic cloisters in England, the second largest spire and over 1,000 beautiful medieval roof bosses. The Cathedral has its own shop selling cards and beautiful gifts. The library contains 7000 rare books including some of the earliest printed in England. The refectory is a lovely mixture of historic and modern décor, set in the Cathedral and serves light lunches, afternoon tea and cakes.
The Cathedral is open from:
7.30am-6pm daily (7pm mid-May to mid-September).
One of the finest Norman secular buildings any where in Europe is the Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery. The present structure has been standing since the 12th century. Today the Castle is the county’s principal museum and is packed with treasures and collections of national importance. In a recent refurbishment, the museum has extended its galleries and thus opening up new areas, previously unseen. If you are interested in the region’s history, the Castle houses the world’s largest teapot collection and magnificent landscapes of the nineteenth century Norwich School of painters.
If you like mustard then why not taste 15 different types! These are available to sample and buy at the unique Colman’s Mustard Shop. This shop also has a Museum tracing the near 200 year history of this favorite delicacy.
