World Heritage listed Fraser Island is 120km long, covers and area of 184,000 hectares, contains over 140 lakes, boasts 230 species of birds, 25 species of mammals, and its waters are visited by dugong, dolphins, turtles and migrating humpback whales. There are a number of ways to explore, while staying in our Fraser Island accommodation. If you own or hire a 4WD it can be brought to the island via the vehicular ferry from Hervey Bay, but a permit is required. Or you can join one of the many tour groups which tour the island, or you can walk the Fraser Island Great Walk, which winds for 90 km between Happy Valley and Dilli Village and can take up to eight days to complete. Be sure to visit some of the island's beautiful lakes while staying in our Fraser Island accommodation. Do not miss the turtles of Lake Allom, the amazing colours of Lake McKenzie and the deep green waters and sand blow hole of Lake Wabby. A site not to be missed, while staying in our Fraser Island accommodation, is the Maheno Shipwreck. The Maheno was wrecked on 75 Mile Beach during a cyclone in 1935 and today is a very picturesque spot. It is not advisable to swim at 75 Mile Beach as there are many sharks and dangerous currents, but the Champagne Pools (naturally occurring rock pools) on 75 Mile Beach are great for a dip. While on 75 Mile Beach be sure to visit The Cathedrals, which are amazingly colourful sand cliffs shaped by the wind and rain. The Butchulla people, who lived on Fraser Island for more than 5500 years, called it "K'gari", which means paradise. While staying in our Fraser Island accommodation, be sure to take the time to appreciate this paradise on earth. Go for a bush walk deep into the rainforest, swim in freshwater lakes and streams, see amazing wildlife and feel the soft sand between your toes. |
