Wotif you could catch an awesome wave, bushwalk to a secret beach and have dinner at a restaurant with ocean views? It’s all possible in Burleigh Heads. With its popular surf beach, Burleigh is right at home on Queensland’s Gold Coast. But unlike much of the coast, this place isn’t about theme parks, nightclubs or shopping malls – although it’s nice and close to all of them. Instead, this suburb has the laidback vibe of a seaside community, and nature is its greatest feature. Book your Burleigh Heads hotel with us now.
Sitting almost halfway between Surfers Paradise and Coolangatta, Burleigh Heads occupies a special space of its own on the Gold Coast. Burleigh Beach is popular with surfers, swimmers and sun-bakers, and the iconic headland is responsible for tubular waves that board riders love. If you’ve been meaning to take a surfing lesson, this is the place. Burleigh Heads National Park is a small national park with rainforest, eucalypts and mangroves. You can take a walk that winds around the rocky tracks of the headland to Echo Beach, a secluded beach on the other side, where the ocean meets Tallebudgera Creek. It’s perfect for a relaxing swim. Make sure you check out the Tumgum Lookout, where you can sometimes catch humpback whales splashing about in the sea between May and September.
Hungry? Burleigh has beachside restaurants where you can have a meal or beer while you watch the ocean. The nearby streets, like James Street, have even more dining options, as well as surf shops, op shops, fashion boutiques and a bowls club. Ed Harry Park is an awesome place for a walk, with a children’s playground and tall trees. The Burleigh Markets are the biggest fashion markets on the Gold Coast, and are held two Sundays a month at Burleigh Heads State School.
Just a couple of kilometres from Burleigh Heads is the suburb’s main residential area: Burleigh Waters. Here you can take a walk next to peaceful man-made Burleigh Lake. Craving some shopping? It’s only a short bus ride to Robina Town Centre or Pacific Fair, two of the Gold Coast’s biggest malls. And if you want to party it up in the clubs at night, Surfers Paradise is only a 20-minute drive away, or you can catch public transport.
