Our Canberra accommodation is perfect for exploring this fascinating city, which was chosen as Australia's capital in 1908 and fully planned in 1912 by Walter Burley Griffin, the winner of an international design competition. Europeans first settled the Canberra area in the 1830s, on the lands of the Indigenous Ngunnawal people, and Canberra's name is thought to mean 'meeting place', derived from the Aboriginal word Kamberra. There is so much to do and see while staying in one of our Canberra hotels: Take a step back into Australian political history at Old Parliament House, which acted as the home of federal government from 1927 to 1988; tour the current home of federal politics, Parliament House; see Phar Lap's abnormally large heart displayed at the National Museum of Australia; research your family tree or browse through Parliamentary papers and war service records at the National Archives; admire portraits of influential Australians at the National Portrait Gallery; pay your respects at the National War Memorial; immerse yourself in art at the National Gallery of Australia; spark your quest for knowledge at Questacon, the National Science and Technology Centre; or see where champions are trained at the Australian Institute of Sport. Canberra has two main football teams, which are the NRL Canberra Raiders, and the countries most successful Super 14 team, the ACT Brumbies.
