Europeans first settled the Canberra area in the 1830s, on the lands of the Indigenous Ngunnawal people, and Canberra's name is thought to mean 'meeting place', derived from the Aboriginal word Kamberra.

Canberra has two main football teams, which are the NRL Canberra Raiders, and the countries most successful Super 14 team, the ACT Brumbies.
