While staying in our Cape Otway accommodation it is advisable to only swim at patrolled beaches as there can be dangerous rips, strong surf and submerged rocks which are hazardous for swimmers. There are a number of beautiful beaches in the area which are patrolled by Surf Life Savers during the summer months and year round on weekends and public holidays, these include the beaches at Apollo Bay and at the mouth of the Kennett and Wye Rivers. Visit the Cape Otway Lightstation complex, while staying in our Otways accommodation, and see the historic lighthouse which was built, in the Greek revival style, in 1848, just 50 years after the first ship entered Bass Strait. While staying in our Otway Ranges accommodation, experience the natural beauty of the area with a visit to the spectacular Great Otway National Park, which covers an area of 103,000 hectares. There are many bush walking trails in the park which range in difficulty and distance. Take a walk into the rainforest and discover Stevenson's Falls and Triplet Falls. Although fishing is not permitted in Marine National Parks, it is permitted in the Gellibrand River, where blackfish, trout and Black Bream can be found. A Victorian Amateur Fishing Licence is required and this can be obtained from local fishing and sports stores. |
