By air: Regular flights connect Auckland and Wellington with Taupo, the nearest domestic airport to Turangi. The road from Taupo toTurangi follows the edge of the lake, making it a very scenic journey of about 40 minutes. By road from Auckland: The drive from Auckland to Turangi takes about 4.5 hours. After crossing the Tongariro River bridge take the first turn on your left (Link Road). Turn right into Taupahi Road and Koura Street is the second turn on your left. By road from Wellington The drive from Wellington to Turangi takes about 4 hours. On your approach into Turangi, turn right off State Highway One into Taupahi Road. Turangi/ Taupo attractions and activities are dominated by the three imposing volcanic peaks of the Tongariro National Park which tower over this pristine New Zealand adventure-land. Skiing on Mount Ruapehu and some of the most captivating mountain walks in the world are only a short 40-minute drive from River Birches. Turangi offers an 18-hole golf course, white-water rafting on the Tongariro and canoeing through the surrounding wetlands. Walkers will enjoy the river walkway alongside River Birches and the many other scenic walks in the area. An easy 35-minute drive north brings you to the tourist hub of Taupo. Here you will find excellent restaurants, bars, shopping and many outdoor pursuits, such as fishing, boating, water-skiing and bungy-jumping and several 18 hole golf courses including the famous Wairakei International Course.. Wine enthusiasts can take a scenic two-hour drive to the superb wine district of Hawke’s Bay. |
