Accommodation in Turangi, at River Birches Lodge includes your choice of 3 guest rooms. River Birches is a low-slung, cedar-clad luxury accommodation retreat set within a peaceful, established garden. The stylish interior reflects its east-meets-west character - sophisticated and welcoming.

This Turangi lodge was recently awarded first place in a prestigious New Zealand Architectural competition, testimony to its understated elegance. French doors open onto a large deck where you can relax and enjoy the serenity of the Tongariro riverside environment.

In summer, join other guests for drinks and canapes before dinner. In winter, share the day’s adventures over pre-dinner drinks by a roaring fire in the drawing room.

There is a well-equipped fitness room, satellite TV, a DVD library, spacious living areas with Wi-Fi and broadband internet services. Central heating keeps the lodge and guest rooms warm during winter. In summer, air conditioning keeps things comfortable.
A cooked breakfast is included in the tariff. If you prefer something a little lighter, try our continental breakfast of homemade cereals and preserves, fresh seasonal fruits and yoghurt. Dinner and lunch are available by advance request. We understand current trends for low-carb, high-protein meals and individual requirements, within reason, can be accommodated (by advance request). We use only the best locally grown, organic produce whenever available.

Dinner by prior-arrangement: 2010 NZ$80 per person for a three course meal featuring fresh local seasonal produce.

Getting There By air: Regular flights connect Auckland and Wellington with Taupo, the nearest domestic airport to Turangi. The road from Taupo toTurangi follows the edge of the lake, making it a very scenic journey of about 40 minutes.


By road from Auckland: The drive from Auckland to Turangi takes about 4.5 hours. After crossing the Tongariro River bridge take the first turn on your left (Link Road). Turn right into Taupahi Road and Koura Street is the second turn on your left.


By road from Wellington
The drive from Wellington to Turangi takes about 4 hours. On your approach into Turangi, turn right off State Highway One into Taupahi Road. Koura Street is the second turn on your right.

Things To Do Turangi/ Taupo attractions and activities are dominated by the three imposing volcanic peaks of the Tongariro National Park which tower over this pristine New Zealand adventure-land. Skiing on Mount Ruapehu and some of the most captivating mountain walks in the world are only a short 40-minute drive from River Birches.

Turangi offers an 18-hole golf course, white-water rafting on the Tongariro and canoeing through the surrounding wetlands. Walkers will enjoy the river walkway alongside River Birches and the many other scenic walks in the area.

An easy 35-minute drive north brings you to the tourist hub of Taupo. Here you will find excellent restaurants, bars, shopping and many outdoor pursuits, such as fishing, boating, water-skiing and bungy-jumping and several 18 hole golf courses including the famous Wairakei International Course..

Wine enthusiasts can take a scenic two-hour drive to the superb wine district of Hawke’s Bay.
