Things To Do Luxury Boat & Cruise Charters

Motorised Dinghies & Kayaks - from the Lodge's jetty you have a choice of boating options including the use of the Lodge’s motorised dinghies and kayaks. Full safety equipment, tuition, fishing gear and tackle are provided.

Luxury Boat Charters - take in the breathtaking scenery onboard a charter vessel, perfect for cruising, relaxing, trout fishing, swimming and accessing all areas of Lake Tarawera at your own pace.

White Water Rafting - the scenery along the rock and tree lined gorge is as much a part of the trip as the exciting waterfalls and rapids. The Wairoa River is situated between Matamata and Tauranga, at the base of the Kaimai Ranges. The ultimate in Rafting in the Bay Of Plenty region, the Wairoa is a full on grade 5 river and is only open 26 days a year (most Sundays during Summer). The water is released from the Ruahihi Power Station to allow the 2-hour Rafting experience of a lifetime.

Helicopter Tours

White Island and Mount Tarawera - contrasting volcanoes and landscapes combine to provide an unforgettable trip. From the steaming crater floor of White Island to the high and exposed summit of Mount Tarawera, this is your unique opportunity to experience New Zealand’s two most prominent volcanic features. This 3.5-hour trip takes you from Solitaire Lodge 25 miles off the Bay of Plenty coast to White Island where you land for an approx. 1hour guided walk around this volcanically active island, once home to factory workers who mined for sulphur. During your trip you will also have the exclusive opportunity of a breathtaking landing on the summit of Mt. Tarawera, a dormant volcano that last erupted in 1886. Closed and sturdy footwear is recommended. Landing is dependent on weather and levels of volcanic activity.

Tarawera Fly-Drive - your 4WD takes you via the dense native bush of the Kaiangaroa forest to the summit of Sacred Mount Tarawera. This drive is a real thrill offering you the most astonishing views of this striking area. Once on the top, you may enjoy an optional guided walk through and around the volcanoes craters before meeting your helicopter. What follows is a scenic flight over no less than nine craters, following the 15 km path of the 1886 eruption to Waimangu Volcanic Valley. On the return flight to Rotorua, you may also enjoy the most spectacular views of Crater Lakes and the local National Parks.

Remote Heli-Fishing - being able to reach this regions top streams and rivers by helicopter allow us opportunity to access the seemingly inaccessible and take advantage of our vast and remote wilderness fishery. Close by the Urewera National Park is home to some of this country’s top fishing streams and much of this vast national park is only practically accessible by helicopter. Apart from the fishing the scenery and scale of the landscape is simply quite stunning. Here in this fishing paradise the thrill of a big fish rising to take a tiny dry fly is an experience not to be missed, a weighted nymph drifted through the deep pools will also bring heart stopping action. This is the ultimate experience for the more competent angler and guaranteed to hook beginners for life.

Trout Fishing

4WD River Fly Fishing Experience - New Zealand is a fly fisherman’s paradise so what better way to experience it than to get off the beaten track with one of our fishing guides to fish a river not everyone can get to. These rivers yield moderate size trout in fast flowing crystal clear water that can strip you down to your backing lightning fast. Expect to travel for one hour to get to the guide’s river of choice and many opportunities to hook and land these marvellous trout.

Lake Fly Fishing Experience - Lake Tarawera, Lake Rotoiti and Lake Okataina are the three lakes in the region that produce trophy trout year after year. These lakes lack suitable spawning rivers to sustain fish populations targeted by high numbers of anglers so supplementary stocking of Lake Tarawera strain trout are released into these lakes each year. These fingerlings thrive on smelt in the lakes growing at an amazing 1 mm per day. Lake Rotorua is not stocked but has one of the highest catch rates in the region while our smaller lakes without smelt provide dry fly opportunities during the warmer months, such are the diverse fishing opportunities that await the fly fisher at Solitaire Lodge.

Remote Heli Fishing - being able to reach this regions top streams and rivers by helicopter allow us opportunity to access the seemingly inaccessible and take advantage of our vast and remote wilderness fishery. Close by the Urewera National Park is home to some of this country’s top fishing streams and much of this vast national park is only practically accessible by helicopter. Sightseeing

Tarawera Falls Walk - private chauffeured boat ride to and from the Tarawera Falls Track entrance. Enjoy a beautiful scenic walk through native bush to the cascading falls where you can marvel at the surroundings and indulge in a picnic lunch. Highlights of the walk are the spectacular falls and the three sites where the river disappears underground to begin its journey to the rock face, where it reappears in a surging torrent. The Tarawera Falls Track is an approx 90min hike to and from the boat jetty, a swimming hole is located 30mins from the outlet so remember to pack your bathers and walking shoes.

Hot Water Beach - these Natural Hot Water Springs are located on the southern side of Lake Tarawera. The water temperature is a constant 38 degrees centigrade year-round. Hot water beach is accessible only by boat. Why not relax in these hot springs after a mornings fishing or enjoy a secluded picnic lunch.

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland - walk at your own pace and absorb the unique features of Wai-O-Tapu including the world famous champagne pool, steaming mudpools, boiling springs, bubbling geysers and silica terraces of extraordinary colour and variety. The natural bush setting adds another dimension to the experience as does the guaranteed daily eruption of the Lady Knox Geyser at 10.15am.

The Buried Village - one of NZ’s most visited historic sites; Te Wairoa was literally buried in the 1886 eruption of Mt Tarawera, for more than four terrifying hours, rocks, ash and boiling hot mud bombarded the once peaceful village. The fiery glow in the night sky and the thunderous roar of the explosions were seen and heard as far away as Auckland. Volcanic ash preserved many of the buildings and other features of the village, which are on display at The Buried Village. The 12 acre park-like setting is filled with tall trees, meadows and native birds offering visitors a peaceful and emotional experience at the same time.

Waimangu Valley and Lake Rotomahana - within 15 years of the Eruption, the hot springs of the Waimangu Geothermal System were established within the newly formed craters, making this the world's newest geothermal eco-system. Plant life returned to the devastated land 30 years after the 1886 eruption. Waimangu Volcanic Valley and Lake Rotomahana are wholly protected as a Scenic Reserve and Wildlife Refuge. Today, you can enjoy a range of easy walking, advanced hiking, and boat cruise experiences ranging in duration from 45 minutes to over 4 hours.
