| Things To Do |
GYMPIE - QUEENSLAND'S HISTORIC TOWN Gympie is heralded as the town that saved Queensland from bankruptcy due to drought and low wool prices back in the 1800s. Thanks to James Nash discovery of gold where the Gympie Town Hall now stands back in 1867, the Gold Rush was started. Within 6 months of James Nash’ windfall, over 15,000 men had raced to Gympie to dig for their fortunes. The town grew at a rapid rate and amazingly many of the original buildings are still there. Traditional shopfronts and excellent examples of 19th Century architecture line historic Mary Street in the centre of town. Enjoy it all by using the Heritage Walk and stopping for refreshments in one of the quaint cafes or bars. Memorial Park, just a block from historic Mary Street, boasts a fabulous display of flowering Jacaranda Trees in the springtime. Gympie exudes tonnes of character in a relaxed country atmosphere. Country markets feature each Sunday in various locations in Gympie, Imbil and Kandanga and the famous Eumundi Markets are held each Saturday only half an hour's drive away. Horse riding is available at Brooloo. Fabulous Noosa Beach is only half an hour's drive away from Gympie. MARY VALLEY RATTLER: Experience the Cooloola Region’s Mary Valley aboard the “Valley Rattler” – easily one of Queensland’s most scenic railway lines. This historic 40km journey commences at Gympie, and after crossing the Mary River, negotiates an abundance of curves, gradients and bridges to pass through the small country villages of Dagun, Amamoor and Kandanga to Imbil. Disembark at any of these original stations, fully restored and landscaped, where you can enjoy interesting excursions within the district and good old-fashioned country hospitality. GYMPIE GOLD MINING AND HISTORICAL MUSEUM: Experience the Gympie gold rush and 100 years of history with more than 30 displays at the Gold Mining and Historical Museum. Set by a picturesque lake, the museum's collection of buildings house memorabilia from the early gold mining era, military, rural, transport, communications, steam and more. Experience it all from the Royal Hotel situated in the centre of historic Mary Street by booking a room and staying a few days. |
