Built in 1859, Cape Schanck light station offers a unique accommodation experience as guests stay in the original lighthouse keeper’s cottages. Situated in a heritage listed maritime precinct and surrounded by National Park, guests are transformed back in time as they become the lighthouse keepers during there stay. Part of the experience includes the opportunity of a tour inside a fully operational lighthouse with access to our maritime museum. To conclude your day, watch the sun set and the light beam sweep over Bass Strait as it has done since 1859. We have two 3 bedroom cottages that can sleep up to 8 guests. One 1 bedroom cottage that can sleep up to 4 guests. One ensuite room that can sleep 1 couple. All of our accommodation retains its original architectural features with the insides renovated to AAA 3 star with our head lighthouse keeper’s cottage rated AAA 3½ stars. Head Keepers’ cottage: Built in 1859 retains the original floor plan with the exception of a bedroom being converted into two bathrooms. The open fire place can still be used today. The cottage is self-contained and all linen is provided. Red Cottage: In 1939 new quarters were built for the head keeper and his family. As it was built during affluent times no expense was spared on the finishing touches. The extensive use of wood remains a feature of this house. In the lounge room there is a reverse cycle air conditioner and an open fire place for those cold winter nights. This is a self contained cottage with three bedrooms and can accommodate up to eight people. This was the residence of the last lighthouse keeper until 1995, even though the lighthouse was fully automated in 1986. Museum cottage: Originally built as the extension to both the assistant keeper’s quarters in 1887. It has now been converted to a single dwelling that is self contained with one bedroom that can sleep up to four guests. This year for the comfort of our guests, we installed a reverse cycle air conditioner. Inspector’s room the Inspector of lighthouses conducted site visits from 1859 onwards. He had his own self contained room with a private entry. The difference being; now it has an en-suite, a queen size bed, microwave oven, kettle and toaster for the convenience of our guests. |
