Property Details

37 Hulbert Street
South Fremantle 6162 WA
Map not available
Located just three blocks from South Beach and a short stroll from Fremantle, The Painted Fish boasts sustainable accommodation in a beautiful seaside garden.

Three uniquely “Freo” dwellings, set amongst air cooling ponds and organic vegetable gardens offer guests the perfect setting for relaxation and contemplation; an oasis within a stone’s throw of the excitement of Fremantle.

Sustainability is a focus at The Painted Fish. Guests will experience developments such as photovoltaic, rain water harvesting, and innovative heating and cooling systems in a series of climatically sensitive, retrofitted dwellings.

The property is also a living gallery, with many local artists providing soft furnishings, sculpture and paintings.

The Painted Fish offers three accommodation options - the carriage, the studio and the cottage.

Each accommodation option has kitchen facilities with tea, coffee, sugar etc provided, a fridge, cooking facilities and basic crockery and linen. All places are non smoking, and have access to laundry facilities and wireless broadband internet. No televisions are supplied but each accommodation option has books, games to play and some basic art equipment. We have provided small stereos and a collection of CDs but ask that you consider the impact of your musical tastes on others. Bikes are available for guest use – see your hosts!

Surrounding each accommodation are water wise gardens or vegetable patches. Central to the property are two large ponds, with several smaller pools hidden away - with fish, frogs and yabbies.

The cottage comfortably sleeps four people in two main bedrooms and a smaller loft bedroom. This is the most child friendly option at the Painted Fish.
This quaint cottage, originally built in 1897 features original pressed tin walls and match pine ceilings.

The kitchen is small but functional (gas stove but no microwave) and includes a dining area with large dining table. A cool living room is the heart of the house.
Each bedroom has a queen sized bed and leads onto an outside courtyard or veranda.
The bathroom has recently been renovated to include a claw foot bath you could drown in!

The studio is our most luxurious accommodation and is most suitable for a single person or couple. It consists of a full kitchen, lounge and dining area and upstairs sleeping room, with a separate but adjacent bathhouse.
The bathhouse (with deep claw foot bath) was made by Tim from capstone rubble with steel and glass doors opening onto an outside copper garden shower also created by Tim.

The kitchen is fully equipped with large fridge, stove top and oven (no microwave), all crockery and cooking utensils, and is made of stainless steel with funky recycled blackbutt and mini orb doors featuring Tim’s original copper handles. The kitchen and dining room open via bi fold doors onto a series of gardens and ponds which provide habitat for native animals– bobtails, frogs, birds, fish and yabbies. The garden has an outside dining table that provides a very romantic setting for candlelight dinners.
The upstairs loft sleeping room offers one queen sized bed and opens onto a walkway leading to an upstairs breakfast platform nestled amongst the branches of an ancient Japanese pepper tree.

Soft furnishings, artwork and interior design are all by Georgina Cresswell, local textile artist and fashion designer (and our good friend and lovely person!)

The carriage offers budget accommodation for one person or a couple. It offers a beautiful wrought iron queen sized bed designed and constructed by Tim, a sitting area and small kitchenette with basic cooking facilities (microwave, bar fridge, basic crockery).

Running along the north of the carriage is a beautiful courtyard sitting area which is covered in clear polycarbonate sheeting to catch the sun in winter and in summer it is shaded by a cooloroo shade sail. The courtyard also contains the “bathroom” – a toilet, shower and basin all set amongst the garden. The shower is another one of Tim’s creations, made from copper pipes with a beautiful sunflower shower head running onto a river rock floor. While private the bathroom can be intimidating for some people not used to Fremantle’s alfresco lifestyle. As one guest commented – “it freaked me out when I first saw it but it turned out to be my favourite thing”.
The courtyard has been fitted out with its own limestone pond which provides habitat for frogs and can be used to cool the courtyard down on unusually hot days.

Things To Do Local Attractions
Where do you start? Really it all depends what you find attractive!

Shani holds the belief that everything you need for a holiday can be found in South Fremantle - between The Painted Fish and Fremantle “proper”. In your room is a book with some of the local attractions highlighted.

The Beach . . .
South Beach is a popular local beach, with a dog beach, safe swimming areas, groins for fishing off, a large lawn area with BBQs and a café. Public toilets and showers are also available.

Shopping for the essentials of life . . .
There are several options for general shopping, all within walking distance of The Painted Fish including grocery stores, a fruit and vege shop, chemist, late night deli, health food store etc

Cafes, pubs and restaurants . . .
There are several great cafes and restaurants between here and Freo. Within a short stroll you can have Italian or Vietnamese food, a wood fired pizza, or an amazing organic meal at Sandcastles – our local organic restaurant. There are several great breakfast places and an authentic French pastry house for afternoon coffees!

There are two pubs on the way into town, both with bottle shops – the Davilak and the Seaview. The Davilak is definitely the “local” pub, there is a fun Irish session there on Sunday afternoon, and live music often. The Seaview has recently been refurbished and has a quite nice restaurant inside.

And the not so essential . . .
Drop into the Fremantle Chocolate Factory and you can watch the chocolates being made, check out second hand book shops, antique shops, several great gift shops and the famous Fremantle Cake of Soap (amazing smells!!)

Art Galleries. . .
There are several local galleries on South Terrace in the strip between The Painted Fish and Fremantle. Our favourite is The Fremantle Contemporary Gallery owned by Steve and Elizabeth. Elizabeth makes fantastic glass work (check out her jewellery!) and occasionally Tim has a painting in the gallery.

Another favourite of ours is Early Works, run by Kate. She can take your child’s art work and turn into a masterpiece!

Pampering –massage, beauty therapy and yoga
All these are available in the strip before Fremantle – check out details in your room..

Please don’t hesitate to ask us if you want information. We have both lived in Fremantle for most of our lives, and most of our holidays have been in WA. We’d love to help you make the most of your time here!
