| Things To Do |
Historic Portland offers a wide array of impressive and significant bluestone buildings. More than 200 buildings are listed as being worthy of preservation and these range from very large Georgian bluestone homes, banks and hotels to humble fishing cottages and include some very fine examples of substantial Edwardian timber homes. Portland's tourist precinct is nestled around a working port, which can be viewed from one of the many cafes and restaurants along Bentinck Street. Portland's Cable Tram and its museum are a must do activity as they link Portland's Botanical Gardens, Victoria's second oldest botanical gardens, the Maritime Discovery Centre and the Watertower and Powerhouse museums. You can learn more of Portland's early history with a visit to the Ploughed Field and the Immigrants Wall(located on the clifftops), which is a short walk away. If you fancy a swim in the ocean then Nuns Beach is approximately 500 metres away. There are many walking tracks in and around the city and the Fawthrop Lagoon track offers easy walking with an opportunity to view the abundant birdlife. Henty Beach, a recreational area, features playground equipment, a skate park and free barbecue facilities. Portland's Aquatic Centre, which features indoor and outdoor heated pools and a fully equipped gymnasium can be accessed on a daily basis(check times on public holidays). Point Danger Gannet Colony, Australia's only mainland Gannet colony is well worth a visit. Located next to an aluminium smelter this colony of large seabirds numbers more than 6,000 and is expanding each year. A short drive will take you to Cape Bridgewater with the opportunity to visit a seal colony. You can take a walk on one of Australia's most beautiful long, white sandy beaches. While you are there make sure you grab a cup of coffee at the cafe. Also located in this area are the Petrified Forest, the Blowholes, Bridgewater Lakes and Discovery Bay. A must do activity is a visit to the Cape Nelson Lighthouse and the Cape Nelson Coastal Park, which features numerous surf beaches and sections of the Great South West Walk. There are many locations in and around Portland where this walk can be accessed for short or longer walks. Other attractions in the Portland area are Barretts Winery at Gorae West and the Strawberry Farm on the Henty Highway. The Portland Lavender Farm and tearooms at Allestree is also well worth a visit. Portland offers an array of boutique clothing, antique and second hand shops. Allow yourself time to browse a while. Make sure you leave time to visit the Glenelg Warehouse and Samsons Woolstore, which feature furniture and all manner of interesting objects. Portland has a variety of restaurants and cafes, catering for all tastes and budgets. It is a good place to base yourself for a few days while you explore the beautiful Discovery Coast Region. |
