Experience history: Take a short ferry boat ride from Fisherman’s Wharf to the former federal prison located on Alcatraz Island, and learn about the notorious criminals such as Al Capone and the Birdman of Alcatraz, who were imprisoned there. Have lunch or dinner above the rocky Pacific coastline and beautiful vistas at the Cliff House, first built in 1863 and visited by Presidents and prominent San Francisco families. Soak in the panoramic views of San Francisco by riding the elevator to the top of the historic 180 foot high Coit Tower, built as a memorial to firefighters after the 1906 earthquake and fire. Tour the Fort Point National Historic Site, the only Civil War era fort west of the Mississippi, complete with a museum and a large collection of military memorabilia and artifacts.

Scenery: Drive down Lombard Street, also known as the “crookedest street in the world” with its twist and turns. Walk or ride a bike across the Golden Gate Bridge and observe beautiful views of San Francisco Bay including Alcatraz and Angel Islands, the Marin Headlands, the San Francisco skyline and the Pacific Ocean. Bike, hike, run or drive through the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, one of the largest urban parks, covering over 75,000 acres and 28 miles of coastline, including Ocean Beach and the Presidio of San Francisco. Relax in the Japanese Tea Garden, row a canoe in Stow Lake, or enjoy a stroll along the natural beauty of Golden Gate Park.

ACTIVITIES WITH CHILDREN:

Curiosity and learning: Get up close to giraffes, hippos, bears and monkeys at the largest zoological park and conservation center in Northern California, the San Francisco Zoo. View over 250 different kinds of animals in naturalistic settings, including the Lipman Family Lemur Forest. Little tikes will enjoy hand feeding farm animals such as sheep’s, goats and mules at the children’s section. Kids and grown ups alike will have their curiosity tested at the Exploratorium, a unique hands-on museum filled with hundreds of science exhibits, located in the Palace of Fine Arts. Test the laws of gravity while you crawl and slide in complete darkness in the maze like Tactile Dome, a separate exhibit inside the Exploratorium.

Fun: Kids will have a great time exploring the sights and activities along the San Francisco waterfront. Starting with Pier 39 and its famous barking sea lions, to fun filled attractions such as Venetian Carousel, Turbo Ride and Aquarium of the Bay. Walk westwards towards Fisherman’s Wharf and visit Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum and Wax Museum, gift shops and restaurants. Taste the Dungeness Crab, sourdough bread or clam chowder along the way. Board the ferryboat at the Wharf and take a leisurely cruise of San Francisco Bay or visit Alcatraz Island. Complete the journey at Ghiradelli Square with it’s unique shops waterfront dining, and the scrumptious Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Factory.
