Kurrajong House is a fully non smoking property with check-in available only from 2pm and 6pm but please phone the day prior if check in is likely to be later than 6pm as reception closes at 7pm. Kurrajong House circa 1879, a fully renovated weatherboard Victorian Period Home with 8 luxury ensuite guestrooms with a self rating between 4 to 4½ stars, located within the most Historic and Scenic Protection Precinct in Launceston and the street where most would love to live yet within only a five minute walk to the city, where we pride ourselves in a quiet, luxurious environment in the leafy location on the eastern side of Launceston surrounded by two parks, mountains and many other beautiful Period Homes and gardens of Windmill Hill. Kurrajong House overlooks Mt Barrow from some of the guest rooms and breakfast room, Windmill Hill Park, the Croquet Lawns, Bowls Club, the Tennis Club and the new under construction Aquatic Centre opening in 2009, not to mention the beautiful pristine gardens of Kurrajong House. The land that Kurrajong House resides was first released to W.K Saunders in 1834 then being a 2 acre property at the cost of 360pounds, then changing hands before being built around 1879. Kurrajong House was know as Iona until Graeme and Julie Gale purchased this property as the 13 and current owners in 1997 converting this magnificent Victorian weatherboard period home into a grand example of great workmanship of the master builders and carpenters of the time and changing the name to Kurrajong House which Kurrajong was the previous location that they lived within the foothills of Sydney’s Blue Mountains and the name being an aboriginal name believed to mean peace reflecting on the feel of this lovely property. The house still exudes the original character yet has the modern conveniences of ensuites, electric light and heating, coffee and tea making and of course private ensuites. Kurrajong House still houses the fine example of the early fire places in many of their guest rooms along with the high ceilings, original leadlight and one original light fitting of that time. Kurrajong House owners have modernized to offer their guests total privacy with two entrances to the main house and private entrances to the guest rooms at the rear of the property. Free off street parking should cater for all guests car, a wonderful private courtyard and rose garden along with water feature, granite, glass and iron outdoor furniture to enjoy an afternoon coffee or a selected wine from our licensed mini bar, Yes Kurrajong House is licensed to paying guests. We have a full brochure rack along with a tour desk to help maximise your sightseeing of this third oldest city in Australia. Kurrajong House has two main buildings on this two titled property, one being the main house and the other the Old Stables at the rear of the property that houses two separate entranced ensuite guest rooms. All rooms at Kurrajong House are at ground level to the car park except for the exceptional few that have only one step to the guest room. The ensuites are designed for the comforts of all guests with walk in showers with no step, some with an additional hand rail within the shower and toilet also. Although Kurrajong House is not set up for disabled facility, it still can very well cater for elderly independent traveller wishing to experience the great hospitality that Kurrajong House owners offer. For those wishing for breakfast, we offer a continental buffet breakfast including fresh juice, choice of stewed fruits, yoghurt, choice of cereals and selection of breads, complimented by a cooked breakfast to order. | Getting There |
Kurrajong House is 14 km from Launceston airport. Turn right from the airport, drive 1km to the main round-a-bout, turn right and follow for 13km through Kings Meadows town, continue without turning off. Drive through the first roundabout at David St, then to the next roundabout at Arthur St next to St Georges Square park, you will then see a little service lane at roundabout, turn left into this lane and follow for 200 metres until you see the sign of Kurrajong House Parking and Reception. You are now here and we do look forward to welcoming you to Kurrajong House. |

Be welcomed at Kurrajong House, we offer the discerning traveler or business executive total privacy in one of the quietest properties in Launceston, within 5 minutes walk of the city center for fine dining and cafe's, shopping or sightseeing, maybe a bus tour, heritage city walking tour, walk to Cataract Gorge then onto the board walk around to the Tamar River Cruises for either a 50 minute cruise or one of their many other offers, maybe an Ice cream or glass of wine at the Seaport, stay on for a fine feast in one of the local restaurants, or come back to Kurrajong House for a discount voucher to one of our favourite restaurants. The next day, maybe enjoy one or more of our many heritage homesteads before driving up the Tamar Valley to the largest Wildlife park in Tasmania to see the devils feed, then onto Grindleworld, the Swiss Village, then stop at a winery or two before the Grubbshaft Museum and Gold mine, then onto Beauty Point to visit Platypus House and Seahorse Farm. You can purchase a triple pass at any one of these locations for a discounted ticket for all venues. Local attractions include, Cataract Gorge, Tamar River Cruises, one of two museums and Art Galleries and Planetarium, 1842 for not only a great gallery but the Heritage walking tour they offer, and the Design Centre for great local gallery work also, Boag's Brewery tour, our many great fine dining experiences, City Park and the monkeys, Princess park and the wonderful water fountain, maybe a ghost tour, a concert in Princes Theatre or a band in one of the local drinking houses, visit one of our many book shops, a visit to our many magnificent churches with such grand architecture, and much more. If you choose not to have a car, we can organise some bus tours of Launceston and the city highlights, a Tamar Valley Tour, a Wildlife Park tour or a trip to Cradle Mountain for the day, just to name a few. |
