| Things To Do |
When taking into account the violent volcanic history of the region and the size of the lake, it is no surprise that the ecology of Lake Taupo is unique. In addition, the lake is land locked by the Huka falls, about 4 kilometres downstream of the lake outlet into the Waikato river, which acts as an effective upstream barrier to migratory fish. This means the biodiversity in the lake is limited to a few original species and those that man has introduced. The following activities can be arranged and priced for you on application for conference groups and they make great work incentives for staff!! FISHING The first trout were liberated into the waters of Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake in 1887. They were the Tasmanian Brown Trout and the Californian Rainbow Trout. With few natural predators, an enormous food supply and hundreds of kilometers of prime spawning streams and rivers flowing into the lake, they thrive. Today, with a self sustaining population of Rainbow and Brown Trout, the Taupo region has cemented its name as one of the world's premier fisheries GOLF Choose from the world-renowned Wairakei International Golf Club, Taupo Golf Club, Centennial or Tauhara Golf courses - all within a 15-minute drive from the township of Taupo. HIKING There are literally dozens of hikes available including around the lake, along the rivers, native bush and mountain trails. Maps for these hikes are available form the Taupo Information Centre on Tongariro Street. LAKE CRUISES There are several boats that cruise the lake on a daily basis (weather and sometimes numbers permitting) for sight-seeing trips. Some offer lunch or a romantic dinner on board. SPAS Taupo Hot Springs and Spa offers a truly unique experience. Enjoy a massage or facial, or bathe in the natural hot mineral pools. There are also natural pools at Spa Park on the Waikato River. PRAWN PARK Experience the world's only geothermal Prawn Park, a true New Zealand success story. Informative guided tours introduce you to their unique way of farming prawns in Taupo. Enjoy a wonderful meal relaxing at the riverside restaurant. DAY WALKS/HIKES Tongariro National Park, a World Heritage Park and home to three volcanoes and many beautiful hikes, including the Tongariro Crossing, one of the most spectacular one-day hikes in New Zealand. GEOTHERMAL PARKS Taupo is at the centre of New Zealand's volcanic plateau. The area contains numerous parks where you can wander among geysers, mud pools, and colourful pink and white terraces formed by the silica in the thermal water. 'Craters Of The Moon' is free to walk through, although a donation will be gratefully accepted. HORSE TREKS / FARM EXPERIENCE There are several horse-trek companies operating in Taupo. Whether you are an experienced rider, or keen for a gentle walk, they will have just the horse for you. Trek through native bush and pine forest with lake, mountain and township views. DAY TRIPS Waitomo Caves. Famous for its black water rafting and glow worms. Hawkes Bay, famous for its wine as well as the art deco architecture of Napier and several beautiful beaches. Rotorua, New Zealand's version of Yellowstone, with active geysers, mud pools, mineral spas and Maori culture. Whakatane, where you can take a boat out to the active volcano on White Island, charter a fishing boat for the day, or enjoy swimming in the Pacific Ocean at Ohope Beach. WINE One of the finest wine cellars in New Zealand is Taupo's own 'Scenic Cellars'. The Wishart Winery is less than a 5 minute drive from town. The Hawkes bay is only a 1.5 hour scenic drive away with stunning wineries and Art Deco architecture. SHOPPING & CAFES The town of Taupo is relaxed and friendly, offering a wide range of restaurants, both outdoor and indoor cafes, art galleries and shops. |
