PS : This is what a travel guide said about us!

…New York Travel Guide Thailand (gave us a Star as well!! and said: "Wow! A guesthouse where you actually feel like a guest in someone's house! In this case, Australian proprietor Timothy Schwan's. Pop-art guestrooms are decorated with giant paintings adorning the walls, chairs in the shape of giant hands, and kitschy lamps. What really creates the impression you are staying in someone's bedroom are the smaller details: a collection of books, including Thai travel guidebooks, Thai language manuals, and easy reading beach novels; a few DVD's atop the TV; colorful beach towels; and cozy beds covered with a dozen pillows and even a stuffed animal. Bathrooms are similarly accoutred. Penthouse room features a huge terrace with two teak sun beds, out door dinning, a lazy banana bed with sweeping 180 degree view and, just indoors, a private bath tub overlooking the terrace towards Chaweng Beach. Breakfasts are arguably the best on the island, although other meals are quite decent as well, and the vibe in the lobby bar/restaurant is friendly and comfortable."…

…Everything was just right, from the beautifully decorated rooms, to the cozy beds to the excellent service. Tim was extremely helpful on several occasions. We felt totally Taken care of. I loved the artistic flair. AKWA was a nice part of our honeymoon here in Thailand. We would love to come back. Brendan and Alison Neutra Oakland, CA, USA …

…we stayed our first night in the Penthouse and it was fab! My highlights were the terrace, the bathtub besides the floor to ceiling glass window and the whole funkiness of the place. It really is something to tell people about back home. There are so many specialnesses!!! Eg: the little sweet and card on the door each night to say good night, mosquito coil, and all the funky objects around the room. My only concern was wether the special aspects and size will stay the same. But Tim said he is happy with the size and nothing will change. I am reassured that the AKWA team has a great means of keeping the high standard high! Not to forget those aspects my boyfriend enjoyed, MP3 Player, TV, DVD, Media Library ets…. Again adding to the whole experience. We will definitely be returning. Stewart and Corrie, United Kingdom....

…My review for AKWA Guesthouse is WELL overdue...I stayed here in January 2008 with my sister as part of a two week holiday. I'm looking at booking another trip to Thailand next year, hence the reason I have accessed the tripadvisor site again. I was slightly skeptical after reading so many wonderful reviews and was not sure if AKWA could live up to my expectations...but it did...not only did it reach them, it far exceeded them!! The staff are what make the place so wonderful. Tim is so hospitable and did everything to make our stay more comfortable...

I don’t like to arrange a taxi picks up as the new airport is very confusing and it is now very difficult for a taxi and or pick up car to actually find you even with a sign. I would suggest that you take a mini bus, or taxi to get to us. This should cost you approximately 150 THB per person and a taxi should be around 300 THB. Again we are located at the south end of renowned Chaweng beach, well away from the hustle and bustle of the main resort areas. We are just across the road from Poppies Resort (very famous). If they are confused just tell them to go to Poppies Resort or Seascape resort as we are opposite these places.

NIGHTLIFE
Koh Samui is well known for it vibrant and exciting nightlife, centered on Chaweng Beach.

The open air bars, pubs, cabaret shows and discos are the most popular night stops for tourists and include great discos like Green Mango, Reggae Pub and Full Cycle (Thai Disco). They are in turn surrounded by many good smaller pubs, beer bars and dance clubs. But the most popular, most fun and a guaranteed great time is definatately The Sweet Soul Cafe. Do not forget to check to check it out!!

Walk anywhere on Chaweng Beach Road and a plethora of wonderful Thai, Asian, and Western Restaurants can be found. For great food, full bodied imported draft beers, and Sports Bar atmosphere, try the Islander or Tropical Murphy's.

Lamai Beach is a lot smaller and more quaint, but not without hot spots for a good time. The largest and most popular disco is the Bauhaus Pub, while a new Thai Disco just opened called Super Sup. All other pubs and bars are within walking distance including the very popular Siam Bar and Grill with great food and live entertainment, Smooth Pub (live band) and Fusion Club.

Finally for a much slower pace you can frequent Fisherman's village in Bo Phut. There are some quality pubs run by Englishmen offering a relaxed fishing village atmosphere (The Crows Nest, The Frog and Gecko, Tropicana and the Pub).

SIGHTSEEING, TOURS & SPORTS
Not only does Samui have some of the best beaches in the world, but also offers many exciting, unique and enjoyable things to do and visit. These include:-

The Big Buddha
Samui's most popular attraction, The Big Buddha sitting 15 meters tall first built in 1972. Most Visitors come to marvel at beauty of this remarkable statue at some point during their holiday.

Hin Ta - Hin Yai
These unusual formations are known as the Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks. The site is a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike because of their close resemblance to male and female genitals.
Their formation and shape have been personified into a local tale describing their existence on the island. The story goes that an old couple's boat wrecked and sunk in the bay, where their bodies washed ashore and created these strange rocks. Whatever their origin though, your pictures will no doubt make for some interesting conversation when shown to friends back home

Monkey Show
On Samui, the monkey is man's best friend. Since for centuries the people here have used monkeys to do the hardest part of the work climbing the trees to pick ripe nuts on their coconut plantations. Until the advent of tourism, coconuts represented the main industry here, so these industrious little animals were greatly prized. In the outdoor theatre, monkeys display their incredible dexterity, and not just at picking coconuts. The entertainment also includes performing elephants

...My boyfriend and I loved everything about this guesthouse/hotel and definitely intend to go back there to stay next time we are in Samui.

I did a lot of research online to find a good place to stay and after reading plenty of rave reviews we decided on the Akwa - and it was the best decision we ever could have made. This place is alive with colour, character and amazing artwork. To top it off the food, owner and staff are fantastic!

The owner Tim is an exceptional host, full of fun, always friendly and energetic and always willing to answer any questions and provide lots of useful information. Though we didn't know it was coming, our holiday experience wouldn't have been complete without having had the pleasure of meeting him and we definitely plan to stay in touch in the future.

All the staff at the Akwa are very friendly and helpful, smiling all the time and making us feel very welcome. Seeing them when we came back from exploring each day was like coming home to a group of flatmate you get on really well with and they were always interested in what we'd been up to which was very refreshing. I read certain complaints in previously reviews about the staffs lack of English speaking and it is true that they have limited complex English but we found this no problem at all as between our extremely limited Thai ('hello' & 'thank you'!) and their far better grasp of English we happily muddled our way through without any mishap or frustration.

We booked a deluxe room for our five nights stay and paid in advance through a website. For no apparent reason as soon as we arrived we were advised that we were being upgraded for the last four nights free of charge to the penthouse which was a huge, but of course, welcome shock. The general gist as far as we could gather was that Tim likes to surprise people when he has the opportunity, he seemed genuinely delighted to do something that made our visit extra special and we can't thank him enough, especially as we'd only just arrived from staying in a wooden tree house in Ko Phi Phi!

The deluxe room on the first night charmed us completely and we would have been more than happy to stay in the room we'd booked, but bemused, we moved into the penthouse above the restaurant/cafe and were completely bewitched.

Every aspect of both rooms was a delight, Egyptian cotton bedding, novelty table lights and accessories all over the place to admire and be amused by, the 'knock your sock off' artwork, a printed folder detailing lots of useful information which was extremely useful, the DVD player and a whole stack of DVD's to choose from, and an extra nice touch was the umbrella in the stand outside each door in case it rains.

I have to say though the Penthouse was really something else - lots more space and sunlight, a lovely decked roof garden with a spirit house and wooden patio furniture and a bath tub...pure bliss!

In future I think we'll have to go penthouse all the way when staying at the Akwa just because it was a touch of pure luxury that once experienced you realise is well worth the extra money, especially as shopping and eating in Thailand is so cheap. Our room was cleaned daily and the staff were again very friendly and smiley, always a bit bashful if they turned up to clean and you were still around.

Then there is the restaurant/cafe, sadly I am ashamed to say that we barely ate anywhere else in the Chaweng area because we became addicted to the Akwa breakfasts (I recommend a Sumui breakfast with a banana shake and Dan loved the fruit and maple syrup pancakes) and Thai food dinner options. Next time I'm sure we will endeavour to eat elsewhere and no doubt still end up just popping back to the Akwa instead - the food is fantastic and when you get Madagascar to watch in the back ground, pleasing tunes (and sometimes show tunes) in the background, seats with lots of pillows to lounge on and a friendly array of other guests and general friendly looking diners to keep you company, along with the usual staff to have a chat too, we found it hard to find anywhere we'd rather go after we tried another couple of places here and there.

To be honest I'm still a bit blissed out just when I remember how much we loved the Akwa and I will be recommending it highly to everyone. To me our stay at the Akwa deserves 5 stars in all the ways that really count. I recommend you go, I know we will be again :)

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Go to the trip booking shop across the road and advise that you are staying at the Akwa and Tim sent you, you get a discount and the one day jeep sight seeing trip we took was out of this world - would recommend to anyone with a sense of adventure....

When we arrived we were met with lots of hello;s and welcomes clean smart hotel friendly staff and a man called Tim. Tim is the owner who just cannot do enough for you, where to go, what to do and with a great sense of humour. The rooms are very large we stayed in the penthouse which was just mind blowing Cd player flat screen tv and lots more. The food is great with a large selection to choose from same as the bar. The location is brilliant 30 seconds from the beech and all the local shops. We travelled in Thailand for 4 months and this was by far the best place we stayed in. As for Tim he is a great hard working guy who values your custom and makes you feel a part of the furniture. We stayed there 10 days and when we left at 0400hrs Tim had made us omelletts, hash browns, toast and jam to take to the airport, what other owner would do that. Tim we hope you and your staff have a great year you deserve it . ARRIVE A STRANGER , LEAVE A FRIEND...

We arrived at AKWA in the evening after a long, long trip from Heathrow . We were warmly welcomed and promptly offered one of AWKA's signature cocktails as the staff took care of our luggage, reservation and sorted out a Thai massage in our room to reduce any possibility of jet lag. Yes, this beginning augured very well indeed!

As our trip was about indulgence and relaxation, we had booked the penthouse on the top floor of the guest house and bar. It did not disappoint. The bed had an unbelievable amount of cushions and was furnished and accessorised with wierd and wonderful personal touches making it feel more like a comfortable home than a guesthouse.

I particularly appreciated the eclectic DVD library and copies of local guides. The information pack that tells you everything you need to know about the island...not that we wandered too far from AKWA as it seemed to meet most of our needs. The location is excellent - the road to the beach is right in front of the guesthouse and this is situated at the quieter end of the beach.

Whether you want local Thai food or something more familiar, you will not be let down - it is all good, honest tucker. The extensive breakfast menu is worth a visit to AKWA alone and sets you up for a day on the beach or recovery from a nights abuse at the local bars - the paracetemols are complementary!

If you like musicals, Tim has a staggeringly large collection of Broadway, West End and Hollywood productions on iTunes so you can sip your evening cocktail and be serenaded to one of your favourites melodies! AWKA very much reflects his warm, observant personality and sense of fun. His staff are equally gracious and keen to make you feel as welcome as possible.

This is a Mecca for those of us who appreciate well cooked, well presented food, friendly, efficient service, comfort, and a laid back environment with a little quirkiness thrown in. Very reasonable too. Thumbs up and very well done to all of you....Sawadee and thank you so much!...
