| Getting There |
Ocean Beach is a yellow Mediterranean-style complex located on the corner of State Highway 35 and Oneroa Road, Wainui Beach, Gisborne. SH 35 is an extension of Gisborne's main street, Gladstone Road. If you are approaching from either north (via Opotiki) or south (via Wairoa)you will enter the city centre via Gladstone Road. Continue of the same road over the bridge, past the harbour (the road name changes to Wainui Road here) and we are 5 kilometers north at Wainui Beach. If you are travelling around the East Coast, via the Pacific Coast Highway, Wainui Beach is the next major settlement after Tolaga Bay. We are located on SH 35 at the Gisborne end of the beach. |
| Parking |
All units have guest car parking directly outside the unit. There are additional car parks available for visitors. Boats and larger vehicles can be parked at the rear of the complex. |
| Things To Do |
Wainui Beach has such a great surfing and swimming beach with many public walkways along the beach and headlands. Nearby Kaiti beach commemorates Captain Cook’s first steps in New Zealand with an obelisk and a cannon from his ship, the Endeavour. Kaiti Hill offers a great lookout across Poverty Bay to Young Nick's Headland which was the first landfall in New Zealand sited by Captain Cook. The city has many sites of historic interest and an abundance of historic bulding such as Wyllie Cottage, Gisborne's first house, built in 1872. Poho-o-Rawiri, a beautifully carved Maori meetinghouse is worthy of a visit for those interested in Maori culture, as is the Museum and Arts Centre. The rich Poverty Bay flats are one of New Zealand’s major wine producing areas and there are wineries where visitors can enjoy tastings and tours. A short drive south to Morere Hot Springs where you can picnic, walk in the pristine bush to private hot pools or enjoy the larger public pools in the complex. For garden lovers Eastwood Hill Aboretum is a world class arboretum and located at Ngatapa which is about a half hour drive south from Gisborne. There are many public walks through the trees and gardens and a visit whuilst in the area to the picturesque Rere Falls nearby is a must. There are numerous good quality golf courses both in the city and surrounding countryside, all within short driving distance. For the more adventurous there is 'Diving with the Sharks', fishing, hunting, surfing, tramping kayaking, and many other exciting outdoor pursuits. Gisborne is surrounded by mountain ranges and pristine trout rivers and lakes. Lake Waikaremoana is a large lake completely surrounded by virgin native bush reserve and if travelling south is well worth a detour. For the fit and active there are round the lake tramping huts to overnight in and caves to explore. |
