From Melbourne proceed up the Hume Highway to the Milawa turn-off (just after the Glenrowan BP/McDonalds complex on the Hume). Travel to Myrtleford via Milawa (Brown Brothers winery, the cheese factory and olive and mustard shops are worth visiting in Milawa). Keep on the Great Alpine Road through Myrtleford to Bright. When you come into Bright you'll find us on the Great Alpine Road (Gavan St) on the right 500m past the first 60 kph sign. We are 1km from the Bright shops and restaurants. If you come in from the south go through Bright until you see Fraser Lane leading off to the right. We're directly opposite Fraser Lane on the left. | Things To Do |
Bright is recognised as one of the prettiest towns in Australia. We're located towards the top of the Ovens Valley at the foot of Mt Hotham and Mt Buffalo but we're only at 300 metres so we have a lovely temperate climate - warm in summer, fresh and sunny in spring, mild autumns and cold but not extreme winter weather. We're surrounded by mountains covered in beautifully dense native forest but the early Bright pioneers also chose to plant many many deciduous European trees which provide shade in summer and a startling blaze of colour in Autumn. The Bright Autumn Festival is one of the premier events in country Victoria. Within Bright we have restaurants to meet all tastes - Thai, Italian, Indian, Australian and of course Simones, rated as one of Victoria's best. There is a brewery, two supermarkets and a great selection of specialty stores for browsing through - we can also boast of one of the best country art galleries which shows the work of local artists and has regular exhibitions of indigenous and other works. Within the Ovens and nearby Kiewa and King Valleys there are wineries, berry farms, asparagus farms, nut and apple orchards, trout fisheries and venison farms, all of which have tasting or retail facilities. Moving out of town there are four-wheel drive tracks through the hills, walking trails (flat or steep), mountain bike tracks, the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail bicycle path and white water rafting. You can go paragliding, abseiling or horse riding. For something a little less energetic there is an acclaimed eighteen hole golf course set in magical surroundings, complete with a very comfortable nineteenth hole. Finally, in winter we're a central point for skiers who want to enjoy Mt Hotham and Mt Beauty or those who are skiing only one field but are looking for less expensive accommodation than is available on the mountains. Bright truly has something for everyone. |
