SIENA Piazza del Campo, whose current configuration is that of the 1300s, is theatre of the famous Palio (horse race) which takes place twice a year, in July and in August. The most important Palazzo, which faces onto the Piazza del Campo, is the Palazzo Pubblico, Municipal Seat; on its left side the Torre del Mangia, symbol of the municipal authority, was abutted around 1340. Not far away from the Accademia Chigiana, is the National Picture Gallery, formed by an outstanding collection which comprises all the Siena art. The Cathedral dell’Assunta, in Romanic-Gothic style, was constructed between the XII and XIII centuries. The structure of the Cathedral is not perfect as the initial project had numerous interruptions but, however, it is considered to be one of the most beautiful Medieval churches in Italy. Beneath the cathedral apse is the Battistero, built in XIV century, enriched by the “Crypt of the Statues” and the most ancient paintings on wall by artists from 1270 to 1280. The Museum of Cathedral Works, constructed in 1870, hosts many masterpieces of various artists, among which stands out the “Maestà” by Duccio da Buoninsegna. The Santa Caterina Church in Fontebranda, with single-nave interior, was built in 1400 and it is frescoed with the story of the Saint. The Santuario Cateriniano, close to the church, hosts paintings which cover the life of the Saint and some of her personal objects. The Basilica of S.Domenico, started in 1226, is an imposing and severe construction in Gothic-Cistercense style. It is dominated by an elegant crenelated bell tower. The S.Francesco church was constructed in 1326, enlarging an already existing little church; it has the interior at Egyptian cross, single nave, and preserves precious frescoes and other works of art. CRETE SENESI The Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore, founded in 1313 dominates the landscape of the Crete. Besides the many works of art there, the Abbey has also a library of forty thousand antique books, testimony to the cultural and artistic importance of the Abbey between the 15th and the 16th century. The small town of Asciano, in the heart of the Crete, still has many of its old medieval palaces and various towers, and has many unusual mixed Romanesque and Gothic architectural forms. ABBAZIA DI SAN GALGANO Between Siena and Massa Marittima lies the spectacular remains of the Abbazia di San Galgano, a splendid building and one of the finest examples of Italian Gothic -Cistercian architecture which was once one of the most important monasteries in Tuscany. With its imposing walls of the now-roofless building; built in brick and travertine, they have remained standing over the centuries and are tangible evidence of the economic power of the community MONTALCINO. Francesco, the 1200s Francescana church restored in the 1800s, preserves a fresco from the 1300 Siena school. S. Biagio, Renaissance monumental construction outside the town, was constructed from 1518 to 1545 in Travertino Stone, has Greek cross interior with central dome, where precious works of art are conserved. Francesco is a 1200s Gothic church, which preserves interesting paintings from the 1300s. SAN GIMIGNANO Porta S. Giovanni, the Southern gate of the city, is the most beautiful gate of the ancient and intact walls from the 1200s.
