| Things To Do |
Adelaide Botanic Gardens (UBD reference Map 4 J2), a haven in the heart of the city, the Adelaide Botanic Gardens is the most visited cultural attraction in South Australia. It's easy to understand the garden's popularity with its range of unique attractions including the picturesque Botanic Park, the International Rose Garden, the stunning Bicentennial Conservatory, the Museum of Economic Botany and the enchanting Palm House, just to name a few. Adelaide Central Gallery (UBD Reference Map 118 C7). Adelaide Central Gallery holds 10 exhibitions a year highlighting the best contemporary artists from South Australia and interstate. The gallery is located within Adelaide Central School of Art. Details of shows and of the Gallery Stockroom can be accessed on their website and in the monthly newsletter Artdate. Adelaide Zoo (UBD Map Reference Map 2 F14). Located in shady parklands a few minutes' walk from Adelaide's city centre is one of Australia's most historic and interesting zoos. Offering much more than a traditional children's outing, Adelaide Zoo is fascinating, beautiful and full of interest. The zoo is the place for everybody to learn about the world's rare and endangered mammals, birds, reptiles and fish, and to take a closer look at some of Australia's own native animals. The zoo is beautifully landscaped with habitat exhibits, walk-through aviaries full of trees, and a superb reptile house. Most animals are exhibited in natural settings, which can magically transport the visitor from a Queensland rainforest to a northern swamp and a moment later to a South East Asian Rainforest. The experience is unforgettable. The Adelaide Zoo is a strong advocate for conservation, education and research. There is a special emphasis on breeding rare species like the Red Panda and the Black-lion Tamarin and on exhibiting seldom seen Australian animals including a thriving colony of the enchanting yellow-footed rock-wallaby, a native of the Flinders Ranges. Features at the Zoo include South East Asian Rainforest, one of the newest additions to the Adelaide Zoo. As you walk through, discover an ever-growing, ever-changing environment that provides a natural habitat for many of South East Asia's endangered animals, such as the Malayan tapir and sun bear, Oriental small-clawed otter, dusky leaf monkey and spectacular Siamese fireback pheasant. Jewels of Asia is a recently constructed aviary containing more than 20 birds and mammals from the Asian Region, all contained within an excellent habitat exhibit. Feeding times: Sealions - 1145 and 1545 daily. Big cats - 1515 Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday. Penguins - 1445 daily. Pelicans - 1430 daily. The Antique Market (UBD Map Reference Map 3 P10). Grote Street comprises 36 of Adelaide's leading antiques and collectables dealers in a 10,000 square foot showroom. Incorporated in the market are the Adelaide Vintage Toy and Collectables. A display of vintage toys, particularly from the 1950s and 1960s, including an important display of vintage Australian made toys. Also vintage advertising, sporting and items used and sold during this period. All are welcome. South Australia's state collection of Australian and International works of art, The Art Gallery of South Australia (UBD Map Reference Map 4 D3) holds one of Australia's finest art collections housed in one of Adelaide's most beautiful historic buildings. It is centrally located on leafy North Terrace between the South Australian Museum and the University of Adelaide and has been an important cultural focus since its establishment in 1881, only 45 years after the first European settlers arrived. The current Elder Wing was in fact the original building, designed in 1897 and opened in early 1900. In 1936 the two level Melrose Wing was added, another wing at the back of the Gallery opened in 1962 and the West Wing extensions, which doubled the size of the Gallery, opened in early 1996. |
