Probably one of the best highlights of the West Country is the traditional tea and scones. The origin of this sumptuous combination of food and drink is a hot topic. Ask any Devon local and they will tell you they come from Devon of course. But ask anybody from the neighbouring county of Cornwall and they will argue they were invented in Cornwall! Here's a tip though—in Devon they spread the cream first and then the jam on their scone—remember that and you'll fit in like a local. Forget it and you'll look like a tourist from Cornwall. Tea rooms are located across the county and we reckon you'll be back for more than one visit.

Devon also has a reputation for beaches and surfing. We won't get carried away and try to sell the coastline as the Northern European Hawaii but the quality of surf is excellent and the swimming good too if you can brave the temperatures. The Tunnels Beaches are the best for swimming thanks to the natural sheltered pools there which keep the water totally still. Croyde beach meanwhile is one of the top surf spots in England and a challenge for those with experience. Many of our Devon hotels are located next to both coasts.
