| Things To Do |
Located in downtown San Francisco, The Pickwick Hotel is ideally situated for both leisure and business travel. Just 1 block away are the famed Cable Car turnaround, the nine storey San Francisco Shopping Centre (Nordstrom’s), the Bloomingdale's flagship store, and Sony Metreon. From the hotel, it's 2 blocks to Moscone Convention Center and 3 blocks to Union Square. Union Square is bounded by Powell, Post, Stockton and Geary Streets. The square is one of the top 4 shopping areas by volume in the United States. The square itself is named for a series of pro-Union demonstrations that took place at the beginning of the Civil War. In the summer of 2002, a year and a half long $25 M Union Square Improvement Project was completed. You'll find upscale shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy's, Gumps, Nieman-Marcus, Prada, Coach, Nike, and many other stores. 1 block from the Pickwick is the famed San Francisco Cable Car turnaround at the end of Powell St at Market. The Powell-Hyde line will take you through to Chinatown, the Cable Car Museum, past famed Lombard Street northbound to the waterfront, with Fisherman's Wharf to the east and Ghirardelli Square to the west. Golden Gate Theatre, located just two blocks east of the hotel, is a 2300 seat Beaux Arts Style theatre built in 1922 for the Orpheum circuit. After undergoing a complete renovation in 1979, it has since played host to the "Best of Broadway" national tour, entertaining countless patrons young and old alike. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, or the MOMA, featuring works by Matisse and Brancusi and the photography of Ansel Adams, Man Ray and Robert Mapplethorpe, opened in 1935 as the first museum in the west devoted solely to modern art. Yerba Buena Gardens and Art Center, home to summer concerts and cultural events from May to October, is located next to MOMA. Both are a short 3 blocks from the Pickwick Hotel. |
