Things To Do THINGS TO DO IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD:

Sohotel is conveniently located amidst lower Manhattan neighborhoods with numerous restaurants, art galleries, museums, theaters, shops, movie theaters, music and dancing clubs – all within walking distance: Soho, Little Italy, Greenwich Village, China Town, and Tribeca.

LITTLE ITALY
Mulberry Street is the heart of Little Italy. Even though next-door Chinatown is slowly encroaching on the borders of Little Italy and there are now less than 5000 Italians living there, it is still a popular neighborhood with many excellent restaurants and a lingering Old World atmosphere.

CHINA TOWN
South of Canal Street lies bustling Chinatown, which has over the years expanded into the Lower East Side and Little Italy. The largest Asian community in North America can be found among the narrow streets between Worth and Hester and East Broadway and West Broadway; its main street is Canal Street.

Many shops offer bargains on clothing and leather. If you walk down Canal Street in the open markets where you can buy knockoffs of most anything and everything. Most of the restaurants can be found near Mott St., there are literally hundreds of them. Need a break from the congestion of Chinatown, relax in Columbus Park, or see the Buddhist Temple on Mott Street, which has a collection of over 100 Buddhas.

The many signs in Chinese, the music pouring into the streets from open windows, the delicious smells from the , noodle shops and tea houses packed side by side, and the sound of the language swirling around you make it easy to feel like you've flown half way around the world in the short time it took to get downtown.

Although the neighborhood is known for its excellent Chinese cuisine, perhaps one of its more secret highlights is the Eastern States Buddhist Temple on Mott Street. Step inside - your spirit will be refreshed and your eyes will be delighted by the sight of 100 golden Buddhas shimmering in the candlelight. Frequent festivals and parades (especially during the January and February Chinese New Year celebrations, when paper puppet dragons, firecrackers, and beating drums rule the streets!), as well as the galleries and curio shops create a glorious celebration of Chinese culture.

SOHO
There are 250 art galleries, nearly as many restaurants, and over a hundred stores packed into Soho’s quarter of a square mile. There are four important museums in Soho, including the Museum for African Art, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, the Alternative Museum, and the New York Fire Museum.

The New York Fire Museum on Spring Street has become a popular place to pay respects to the heroes of September 11. It’s nostalgic displays include collections of hand-pulled and horse-drawn apparatus, fire engines, fireboat equipment, firefightiers’ clothing and other firefighter-related objects from the 18th century right up to today.

Soho is famous for its buildings with cast iron fronts. These structures, built as warehouses and factories, have been converted into lofts and are popular with artists and sculptors who value large spaces. The neighborhood, located south of Houston (that’s pronounced HOW-ston) and north of Canal streets, attracts residents who value an off-beat existence.
