Adelaide Boutique Bars

You've gotta love Adelaide: there's a pub on every corner and the city's laneways and rooftops hide swanky and sweet little bars. Revamping traditional drinks with local ingredients, Adelaide's innovative bartenders are fully on trend.

Adelaide is full of small, independent bars with kick-ass beers on tap, impressive wine menus, sexy cocktails and the latest tipple of choice, South Australian gin. Local distilleries have been taking this London classic on a joy ride.

Sip on G&Ts infused with native desert limes, organic goji berries or other botanicals and you'll understand what the fuss is about.

Bank Street Social has "SA Boutique" written all over it. This basement bar showcases the artistic talents of young South Australian winemakers, distillers and brewers. Even the pizzas are named after the state's famous food regions. It's the perfect one-stop shop if you're only in Adelaide for one night.

There are plenty of other small bars to discover too...

Wonderful Wines

Surrounded by award-winning wineries, Adelaide's boutique wine bars can draw on many a top drop, the kind of vino that tickles your tastebuds and soothes your soul.

Local Wine Co's extensive wine list alone proves that SA is vino heaven. Still not convinced? Then try Proof, a cute little wine bar in the laneway behind Press* Food & Wine. Some others that stand out are La Buvette, serving only French and local wines without preservatives, Cantina Sociale, pouring never-to-be-bottled local blends straight from the barrel and Hellbound Wine Bar, tempting you with seductive drops.

Bold Brews & Sensational Spirits

Adelaide is full of pubs and Melbourne Street is a good place to start if you love a good pub crawl. Or, why not check out where it all began at The Ed Castle, Adelaide's oldest continuously licensed hotel that still has mainly Coopers on tap. By contrast, The Wheatsheaf Hotel has more than a dozen rotating taps exclusively reserved for craft beers from the likes of Pirate Life, Big Shed Brewing Concern and other emerging local breweries. Nola is where craft beer aficionados mingle with whisky lovers. Baddog is great for whiskies too while Thrift Shop Bar is all about Australian spirits.

Killer Cocktails

Let Lotus Lounge's Friday happy hour get your weekend off to a smooth start. Order another cocktail with your pizza at Anchovy Bandit, then crawl on to Bar Torino or Mr Goodbar. Refreshingly sophisticated, Bibliotheca Bar and Book Exchange pours spirits from around the world. Sip on clever concoctions, named after famous authors, while you flick through a classic novel. Peel Street has some of the city's best cocktails bars, but they're not easy to find. Hints: Maybe Mae is hidden behind a wooden panel, Therapy keeps a low profile in a basement and Florence Rooftop Bar sits above the street's carpark. Elsewhere in Adelaide, the bartenders of Pink Moon Saloon are religious about serving unique cocktails infused with typical South Australian flavours. The Coffee Pot, with its cheerful 1960s decor, has ditched the coffees for cocktails too. At 2KW, a mellow rooftop bar on the 8th floor, bring out one more toast to the "City of Cocktails", oops sorry, "City of Churches" while the sun sets over St Peter's Cathedral.
