Wollongong City Beach
Immerse yourself in the buzzing atmosphere or find your own secluded patch of sand on this vast beach that stretches for miles along the city’s gorgeous coastline.
Wollongong City Beach encompasses the broad sweep of sand directly fronting the city and is the home of the Wollongong Surf Life Saving Club. Extending 1.9 miles (3.1 kilometers) from Flagstaff Point to the Port Kembla seawall, the beach has plenty of room for you to stretch out and enjoy some space. With its easy beachfront access and fantastic amenities, Wollongong City Beach is a popular spot to have fun in the sunshine and the gorgeous waters of the Pacific Ocean.
Wander down to the beach and take in the vista of the open waters. To the north, you’ll see the gentle rise of Flagstaff Hill and the rocky bluff of the point. The beach is backed by a foreshore reserve dotted with coastal grasses and shrubs. Join the crowds of beachgoers that flock to the northern end of the beach, which is overlooked by the historic Wollongong SLSC and the City Beach Function Centre. Lay out your towel and soak up some sunshine or check the surf.
Go for a refreshing swim in the lifeguard-patrolled ocean waters or play among the rock pools with the kids. The safest swimming area is on the northern section of the beach between the lifeguard flags. Surfers can take on the beach breaks that sometimes roll in to shore further south.
Sit down for a meal at one of the waterfront restaurants or pack a picnic to enjoy on the foreshore reserve. Lang Park and the reserve have picnic areas and trees that offer some shade from the summer sun. Toward the south of the beach, you’ll find the Wollongong Golf Course and the wild surf of Coniston Beach. This area is not considered safe for swimming.
Wollongong City Beach is located directly to the west of the city center. Arrive at the beach easily by public bus or on foot from central Wollongong. There is free parking available at the base of Flagstaff Hill and alongside the foreshore reserve. Lifeguards patrol the beach daily during the summer. The beach is free to visit anytime.
