Longing for a beach holiday near Sydney but don’t want to deal with the crowds at Bondi? Then head to Cronulla, a suburb with beaches running all the way from north to south. There’s no way you’ll miss the chance to catch blue waves and sunny rays here, and our range of Cronulla hotels will put you in the middle of the action.
Originally inhabited by the Gweagal, an Aboriginal tribe, Cronulla’s name is derived from ‘kurranulla’, a word in their dialect meaning ‘place of the pink seashells’. You may not see many pink seashells by the seashore anymore, but you can expect gorgeous golden sand, deep blue water and awesome weather to match. There are eight beaches stretching from Cronulla’s north to south coast, including Wanda Beach, Elouera Beach, North Cronulla Beach, Shelly Beach and Cronulla Beach, so if one of them looks too crowded, all you have to do is walk a few minutes to the next! Wherever you go, the waves are perfect for swimming, surfing, bodyboarding and kayaking, but if you’ve forgotten your gear, don’t worry – there are plenty of vendors in the area that loan equipment. Newbies to water sports can learn how to navigate the waters with a lesson or two as well. Another great place for surfing is Shark Island, just off Cronulla Beach, where the world-famous Shark Island Challenge bodyboarding contest is held each summer.
Need a break from the water? Then head to Cronulla Plaza on Cronulla Street, an open-air pedestrian mall with heaps to do for the whole family. Plan your holiday at the visitor centre, catch a movie at the art deco-style Cronulla Cinema or shop for new swimmers or other clothing at the boutiques that line the plaza. If you’re feeling like a caffeine fix or something a little more substantial, indulge at one of the cafes and eateries in the area. Café culture is a big part of life in Cronulla, so you’re sure to be spoiled for choice! You’ll have no shortage of options at night either, with many bars, clubs and pubs open to people looking for a good time. Cronulla Street also hosts the Spring Festival in September, a popular event that attractions almost 30,000 people each year. Enjoy live entertainment, kids’ rides, free food and stalls selling knick-knacks.
