    Pocket Guide: Orlando

Orlando is theme park heaven. There are more than a dozen of them here, including Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and worlds based around Lego and Harry Potter. If you’re looking for fun, this Florida city delivers, and not just with theme parks. You’ll also find a thriving theatre scene, busy nightlife, lovely gardens and the country’s second largest convention centre. Book one of our Orlando hotels and let your trip to Orlando bloom.

Orlando was once a town of plantations and cattle ranches. When Walt Disney World opened here in 1971, it was the start of a new era. SeaWorld Florida followed in 1973, and as more attractions developed, Orlando was transformed into a super-popular tourist spot.

    Things to do

The world’s most-visited theme park, Walt Disney World is actually four parks in one and has a haunted mansion, Cinderella’s magnificent castle, a spaceship that takes you back to the dawn of humankind and an animal kingdom. Universal Studios is a whole world in itself, featuring rides, restaurants, nightlife and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Legoland is dedicated to (you guessed it) Lego, and has more than 50 rides, shows and a mini Lego city constructed out of 20 million pieces of Lego and representing seven areas of the USA. At Discovery Cove, you can swim with bottlenose dolphins and walk along a reef on the ocean floor – and if you love the ocean, there’s plenty more to do at its sister park SeaWorld.

After dark, check out a live performance from Cirque de Soleil or Blue Man Group or catch a show at one of Orlando’s theatres. There’s live music, stand-up comedy and dance clubs to choose from.

And when you just want to unwind, spend some time in Bok Tower Garden. Voted “Florida’s best garden”, it has 50 acres of beautiful nature and a Gothic tower that sings twice a day from its 60-bell carillon.

    Shopping and dining

Orlando is rich with shopping spots: malls, factory shops, open-air villages. Restaurants range from theme park dining to theatre dinners and beyond. If you’re spending time at the massive Orange County Convention Centre, Restaurant Row is only a five-minute drive away and offers more than two dozen diverse spots to eat.
