Named after early explorer and botanist Sir Joseph Banks, Bankstown drew a strong population following the development of an important air base during World War II. Originally a rural area, Bankstown is now home to over 180,000 people from all over the globe, who have together created a suburb as diverse as they are. Thanks to this, an eclectic range of restaurants, cafes and fast food outlets allow you to eat your way around the world without even stepping foot onto an aeroplane. The most condensed dining areas sit around Bankstown Railway Station, and along Greenfields Parade and Chapel Road. To celebrate this rich culinary diversity, Bankstown Bites festival is one of Sydney’s most savoured food festivals. If you’re here in July, don’t miss it! There are cooking demonstrations, food tours, celebrity chefs, performances and more food stalls than you can poke a fork at.
To work off that food baby, Bankstown is also home to pretty parklands and the river foreshores of Georges River National Park. Stroll along the tranquil water’s edge, take one of the bushwalking tracks, or get out on the water on a boat or water-skis. Mirambeena Regional Park is a lovely spot that’s great for picnics. For bird’s eye views, take a scenic flight from the Bankstown Airport over the city to the mouth of Sydney Harbour and all the way to the Blue Mountains! The airport is also home to the Australian Aviation Museum, for those who like a little history with their view. If shopping is more your holiday style, uncover the charming Old Town Centre Plaza, housed in a 1918 Council Chambers building – or for a more mainstream shopping experience, Centro Bankstown has all the major retail chains you’re looking for.
