Dirty, smelly, damp and grossly outdated furniture

We booked the place as a wedding anniversary present to each other. Booked just 1 night for £400 on the 30/11/24. We arrived at the hotel only to find out we are on a basement of an annexed building to the hotel. The corridors dirty and damp and the room was a box room with done awful furniture and a very uncomfortable bed. The bath room had broken sink and was so outdated. The place wouldn’t even pass a 1 star B&B rating. The staff were not friendly nor helpful at all. And the bar shut down at 9.30 pm. The sofas in the main communal area were dirty old and ripped! We paid £24 for our car’s overnight stay at the hotels car park which we had to fight quite hard to get a spot for it. Only to find out 2 month later that a hefty £120 penalty charge issued to us as the hotel although taking the money but didn’t inform the car park company! The whole thing was so scandalous and awful and completely ruined our anniversary.

This hotel is in a state of decline. No central heating in rooms, portable electric heaters throughout common areas! Food quality poor and declining with each visit. The rebrand from the Principal hasn’t masked the fundamental issues with this hotel. A real shame as it’s service quality used to match its appearance.

Great overnight date night stay

Stunning Hotel, great location by the train station, nice walk into town. Upgraded to suite, fantastic room - No hairdryer though, called down a few times and no answer from reception which was inconvenient for Mrs - But they full of apologies when we walked down to explain and sure enough hairdryer in room for when we got back to room later. Good bar, great service and nice atmosphere.

Always stay here when in York. Normally visit once a year. Friendly staff rooms comfortable food good. We did eat dinner on the hotel which was very good. The only down side is the parking as very busy lucky we did always manage to find the last spot. Hotel handy to walk into York.

An ok stay

The hotel is very big, and some public rooms were quite chilly in the evening, including the restaurant; I had a superior king size room, the mattress was sprung and I could feel the springs; the service tray was very limited, with very cheap biscuits. The chilled water cans were very good. Breakfast was fairly good, but the pastries had run out by 9.15.

Quite a nice stay. Breakfast adequate but not exciting and staff helpful. Rooms clean. Heating a little noisy though- the fan stopping and starting woke us up on more than one occasion.

A slightly disappointing stay

The experience started well with a warm welcome and a complimentary room upgrade. The room was a good size and had all the facilities that you would expect from a 4 star hotel. The internet in the room was poor, dropping out on the window side of the bed! The so called smart TV wasn’t very smart, as there was no apps and I was unable to connect my phone to it either. The sink was also slow running, which should have been picked up when the room was cleaned . At breakfast although it finished at 1030, fifteen minutes prior to this all juices tea and coffee were taken away, all parties around us were surprised and were going to have more drinks. I reported the issues on leaving the hotel, but the receptionist although saying sorry, didn’t note down any of the problems - so the next guest will have the same issues! What a shame as the building is stunning with lots of period features and just outside of the beautiful city of York.

Room had plenty of character- receptionist on check out was a great ambassador for the hotel - on site parking great and fees transparent-pay in hotel as opposed to ticket machine - would definitely go back to the Milner if we return to York
