We mostly enjoyed our stay at the Heritage Hotel in the Tower wing. The room was clean and maintained to a good standard for the price. Facilities such as the sauna and swimming pool were fine, but it was disappointing to find that nothing was staffed - Hector's restaurant has closed (now an Indian restaurant open evenings only), the swimming pool bar closed, lobby bar closed, no onsite breakfast option, and 90% of the time there is no one at the Tower reception desk - meaning it feels inconvenient to use the valet parking from that location (you call main reception, they drive car around or send someone over to collect keys off you, and you wait every time - its okay but as a kiwi I feel like I'm inconveniencing people as well as enduring the wait myself. So in practice we'd walk over to the main reception and ask for the car to be brought out, and on return we would drop the car off at main reception and walk back to the tower ourselves - rather than going to the Tower reception and having to call and ask that someone come over to the tower to collect the keys, and wait for them to do so). Petty perhaps, but as I am paying I want the service to be convenient. I think the bottom line is that the Tower Block has a lot of permanent residents living in it, so the place is no longer really set up with the staffing I would expect of a 4 star hotel. If you want to stay in a hotel, ask to stay in the main hotel block, not the Tower block.

Great stay in the centre of town. Easily walkable to waterfront. Good bus transport links locally. Room clean, beds extremely comfortable, decor slightly dated (but is called the heritage hotel). Had good weather so only used roof top gym and pool/hot tub, great facilities. Didn’t go to the indoor facilities so can’t comment. Had a couple of technical issues with the booking but was sorted promptly by friendly staff. Staff also able to give good local advice and knowledge. Restaurant (run separately to hotel) was not open whilst we were there, shame we weren’t able to grab a coffee/something to get within hotel but lots of local options. Would stay again.
