I knew things were wrong when I saw that the check-in counter and the drinks bar were the same structure. And it got worse. In one single, dingy room, the check-in staff double up as bar tender, wait-staff, and cleaners as well. If you want to order a meal or a drink, you cannot get anyone's attention because they are checking customers in. You can only resort to using a QR code for your order, and then good luck! The chances of anyone noticing your order are almost zero, because they are, well, checking in guests. I got a pizza that was so overcooked the toppings formed a large biscuit; my pre-meal drink came with my meal, while my meal drink came after I had finished eating, but the latter two only came at all after I had walked up to the check-in desk and forced someone to actually look at the order screen. As a business model, it is very, very impersonal, and very, very ineffective, because checking-in always takes priority over the other needs. Holiday Inn have designed a bonkers process so that they can lower their costs at the expense of their customers' comfort. And two more things just to make the weary traveler even more stressed: the bathroom wall is decorated with an airport Departures Board, the last thing you want to be thinking about after a long journey, and finally: there is a night light in the bathroom that you cannot switch off that shines brightly into the bedroom, perfectly designed to prevent you from going to sleep.
